Living in Germany

I lived there for ten years, half in a place called Monchengladbach, half in berlin:

Pros:

*Some beautiful countryside and places like Bonn and Koln along with some fantastic landmarks and architecture.
*Some beautiful weather in summer (35c).
*Connected to the rest of Europe, makes travelling (for skiing!) very easy.
*Far more mature responsible and often civilized society than in the UK, very little noticeable yobbish element in the youth compared to us and they learn how to responsibly use alcohol from a younger age.
*Some genuinely lovely and very friendly people.
*Home of the best Doner Kebabs, they make those in the UK look like prison food, completely different and you can eat two in a row and be ready for more.
*Berlin is an amazing place to live with some amazing bars, clubs and things to do, great shops too.

Cons:

*Turkish youths can be a nuisance.
*German people are pretty dour, and their version of comedy (on TV etc) is quite frankly pap.
*Economy is in a lot of trouble at the mo, my dad works out there for Queens Moat Houses.

Anyway it's not a boring country with boring people, that's a quite frankly silly and rather immature view statement of someone who must have really made good use of his time there.

Its a lovely country with a lot of things to do and see, more than in the UK in my opinion having lived in both for a long time.

:)

its not a boring country, or boring people. fact.

anyways this thread cant really go anywhere its all personal opinion.
OK, so when someone doesn't agree with yours it's toys out the pram time? Grow up.

Eh? Those posts were exchanged over 20 mins ago, it's quite obviously over, seems you're just giving us a ticking off for the sake of it.

I'm not just giving you a "ticking off for the sake of it". I'm telling you to both calm it down and stop trashing threads like this one has been with your bickering. It doesn't matter whether it was over or not, the fact still remained that your argueing was ruining the thread and it was not needed. If you want to question moderating in the future, email a mod and please don't quesiton it on the forums. thanks

cant you just drop it tru? dont carry it on, or start arguments.

Probably quoting me.

Ahem. I moved there when I was 2 months old. I lived there until I was 17, and also worked there for a year for placement.

Does that give my opinion more weight? No, its not about weight, everyone is entitled to their own opinions. Its just that I have seen more of the country than you possibly could have, and it just so happens that what I have seen is totally not my cup of tea.

If you have a problem with that opinion - tough. Go live there 17 years, then come back and we can chat about our impressions.

I've been to Germany quite a few times and I love it. The Cities are great, the language is awesome and the beer is good too. As mentioned already, there are problems with minorities integrating ie: Turks.

I think Richdog summed it up perfectly.

You cannot say an entire nation is boring. I lived with a German guy for a year in Swtizerland and he was the craziest mofo I have ever met. Still keep in contact with him to go to Oktoberfest every year!

No jobs, racism in East Germany, stupid mentality, ridiculously high taxes, no sense of humour, boring people, boring country.
people there actually get work done instead of messing about, taking 15 min coffee breaks every 30 mins talking about pap etc etc.

They are a lot more hardworking, hence the excellent quality automobiles compared to our rovers and TVRs.

Fair enough, just a shame that for 10 of those years you were barely sentient enough to think about much beyone 'food and toys', and the remaining years not mature enough to appreciate the finer things in life and do 90% of the things adults enjoy doing. :)

I lived in Germany twice. However asking what the pro's and con's are is going to be a bit difficult. It's a bit like asking someone what it's like to live in the UK. You would get wholly different answers if you were asking about the Highlands, Glasgow, Newcastle, the West Country or London. I lived in Nordrhein-Westfalen and really liked it there, but there were other parts I wouldn't have wanted to live in at all. From my personal experience:

Lots of places to see and travel - with the autobahns you can jump in your car and be in so many other countries in no time at all.
Loved the food over there and found generally the standard of restaurants was higher than the standard here.
Great wine - the Ahr Valley was a great place to spend a few days! :D
Being able to immerse yourself in a completely different culture.
Being able to go out for an evening and not have to pick your way around the fights and the yobs.

They have such a strange sense of humour.
You really need to make an effort to learn German (not really a con - but some people like countries where they can get away with speaking english a fair amount of the time) - most young Germans can speak very good English but many older people only speak German (A lot of TV is dubbed and cinemas likewise - although this could have changed since I was there).
The immigrant communites aren't quite as intergrated into society as they are here. This often can lead to friction between 'locals' and other minority groups.
