I've been approached about working there and whilst the job sounds ok and tax situation sounds great but I'm not too sure about the location.

Has anyone lived there that could give be a run down on what it would be like?

They speak English, unlike bits of Wales :D

It is often joked that it's about 5 years behind the rest of the British Isles. It's not a surveillance society, run by a nanny state on the orders of the EU so it's probably true.

There are some downsides but only because of the cost of getting yourself or any mail order goods to the island. Other than that its like the Lake District, but without the same number of tourists (except during the TT)

Ive been to the Isle of Wight, nice place, very small though you could drive from one end to the other in a couple of hours.

Didnt they temporaily change it to the Isle of Sofe or sommin for some girl on a TV competition!?

I lived there for 5 years, from '96 to '01. Went back for a visit last year for the TT and it hasn't changed much - what do you want to know?

In summary, I loved the place. No crime, sensible attitudes to policing, a good NHS, very low taxation, beautiful scenery, amazing roads with some unrestricted ones (mostly over the mountain).

The cost of living in theory is a little higher than the UK but in reality we found it much cheaper. Food is slightly more but then we used to pay about £400 a year for rates (ie equivalent of council tax and water rates) road tax used to be about £55 per year and as a married couple with a mortgage my tax allowance was about £20k, and then paid tax at 10%.

The downside is it can feel a bit isolating in the winter months when it rains (a lot!) so you tent to spend a lot of the money you've saved on expensive flights and ferries to visit relatives in the UK. This is the reason we came back - I made loads of friends out there but my wife didnt and became homesick

I go there regularly for work, nice place but I would only want ot live there if I was older... as a young'un I would find it wayyyy too restrictive, there's not much to do even in the main city of Douglas, and it can be a very claustrophobic place!

People shag like rabbits though, must be one of the only things to do on the island judging from what people there tell me. :D

My friend’s dad lives there for ‘tax reasons’ now that he is retired. My friend goes there once a month or so and says there isn’t much to do. That’s about all I know about the IOM.

This is true, and one of the reasons I'd go like a shot if I was single! Its (at least was) full of young single people shipped in from the UK to work in the finance sector. The social scene used to be really good. The nightclubs are awful, but the pubs are great.

Thats so far off the mark its not true. More than half of the population are 'immigrants' from the UK.

Who said they weren't? Perhaps you need to work on your reading and comprehension skills...?

It is a fact that over the vast majority of the island, 'locals' don't like 'visitors'.

And inbreeding is rife.
