Living on the Isle of Man?

Thanks for the replies.

I lived there for 5 years, from '96 to '01. Went back for a visit last year for the TT and it hasn't changed much - what do you want to know?

I'm most interested in the social side of living there. With it only being 221sq miles and a population of 80,000 I'm wondering if it would be like living in a town that I can easily leave. Is there much to do?

I'd also be interested in house prices and what areas are good to live it / should be avoided.

It is a fact that over the vast majority of the island, 'locals' don't like 'visitors'.

And inbreeding is rife.

Absolute rubbish. Have you ever been? Its one of the friendliest places I've ever lived. No UK town/city would open its doors to the world the way that the IoM does in TT fortnight for example. You're giving the impession that its like a scene from the Wickerman!

Depends what you like doing. Theres loads to do if you're into any sort of sport, and its a cyclists paradise. Basically the outdoors life is superb, as is motorsposts. Theres a big paintball and laserquest following if you're into that sort of thing. Other than that I suppose its like any other UK town, with all the same high street stores and brands. I lived in Onchan, near Douglas, and I'd recommend it as somewhere to live as you're only 5 mins away from the main town but at the same time its almost like a village. To be honest there not really any bad areas compared to the UK - the council estate near the swiming pool in Douglas used to be relatively rough, but relative is the key word. I'd avoid the temptation to live in the small villages miles from Douglas though. It might be a smallish island, but a 15 mile commute is still a 15 mile commute and traffic into Douglas can be bad.

There are loads and loads of good pubs all over the island - it used to be described as 60,000 alchoholics clinging to a rock (population has grown now!).

Technology is pretty good - they had 3G before the Uk and when I was there the Government would pay for you to have broadband installed (and before that ISDN)

Liverpool is a cheap day trip on the ferry as a foot passenger, but it is expensive to take a vehicle on the ferry.

Oh, if you're into *ahem* substances I'd stay away - they have a zero tolerance of drugs. A young lad that worked for me was found with 2 ecstasy tabs and sent down for 3 months (served 8 weeks) and that was a first offence.

Bascially its like the UK should be - tough on crime, no nanny state, very little in the way of dole scroungers and low tax :)

To be fair i've rarely met a friendlier bunch of people... i've had nothing but a cheery greeting and a friendly chat from locals no matter where i've been.

Not according to my relatives who moved there from Australia. Very welcoming bunch of people.

Is your opinion based on having actually visited the IoM?

Who said they weren't? Perhaps you need to work on your reading and comprehension skills...?

inbreeding only really takes place in foxdale thats benny country lol.

My family all moved over, mum and dad with work. both my sisters with their husbands and kids have moved over for the better way of life. School systems very good and health care is also very good.

I go over every year and im getting married in castle rushen in aug this year :D

Some absolutely rubbish being posted about it not being friendly to non locals. I live on the IOM and am not manx (family moved her quite a few years ago albeit) but on the most part everyone is friendly, even including the locals in most pubs.

My housemate moved to the IOM when she was 8. I get the impression that it's very laid back and everything is nice. TT sounds amazing. The three downsides that I can think of are:

They all hate Clarkson (something to do with closing footpaths)
Fuel is a lot more expensive than in the UK
It could get pricey seeing friends and family if you're always going to them. (This is the most common complaint from my housemate as she's now at uni in Liverpool and can't afford to go home as much as she wants.)

This is a big factor for me as my photography means I get around the UK a fair bit. Checking the photos I've got uploaded for 2007 it looks like I made 35 day trips. I wouldn't be able to do that from the Isle of Man. I would be looking at rather than doing 35 single trips, I'd have to full weeks less frequently but even then at 140 to 180 a round trip on the ferry it's going to get expensive.

Yeah that doesn't sound too promising. I thought that the ferry was £40 returnish if you book it in advance. How about the plane is it possible to get it cheaper by booking much earlier and planning it out?

I'm not sure about booking in advance I just looked at a couple of dates to gauge the price. I would need a car to get to all the locations I go to. Depending on where it is in the UK a flight and a hire car might work.

It could work if the pay and number of days holiday is right. :)

wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Yes, I have been there. A few dozen times at least.

Friendly for the TT when they fleece the visitors but rather cold the rest of the year.
