Lizard squad -why do they do it?

I think it's pretty poor that a DDOS attack is effective on a service as extensively funded as MS & Sony's gaming networks.

Perhaps that was the motivation - to highlight to the world that both groups are too cheap to build a server farm properly.

when Gordon replied "but that's different" :D
There's a life story in there somewhere.

You are of the age (and at the right time) to start singing (out loud or not): "Gordon is a moron, Gordon is a moron"... As we used to with the clueless Gordon I used to work with. Although with him, the game was to sing all the bits leading up that, without ever getting that far.

You can hire DDOS as a service (booters) for a low number of dollars, these easily hit 50gbps. Hire 10 or so of these and you can hit a server farm with 500 Gbps easily. What server farm do you think is going to be able to handle it when all the bandwidth towards it is saturated?

This - there is little to no skill involved in what they are doing. Yes there are some edge solutions which can help quickly identify DDoS attacks, but with the lag they would throw onto a service like Live/PSN, not sure they could really implement them.

"The man is so bad, imposing his will upon me.... let me take revenge by imposing my will upon others...." -- idiots all of them. Media are just as annoying though with all the hacking bs - he's not a hacker, he's a very naughty boy.

I've just paid for Xbox live for my 9 yr old lad for Christmas.

I was shocked to receive a full refund from Microsoft??

Any explanation for this?

shows up how bad these new online consoles are if a few kids can stop millions of people enjoying their £300+ entertainment systems at any time they like.

Actually it shows how bad these new games are that require an always on connection to play or as a form of DRM. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the consoles. And just about any server farm will go under when bombarded with enough requests.

This is what I thought at first too, but after speaking to various people who know more about this than I do about... well, anything, it would appear that this is in fact extremely hard to counter. One said it'd take roughly ten times the computing power of the attacking botnet to defend against it.

No idea personally.
