Try something other than silverline drill bits, the ones I used were cack
The little 3/4mm one we started with was great just cut into the stud without problem. Soon as the size started going up the bits started failing
Once you get the locking nuts off just put regular nuts back on. No one is going to steal a standard alloy anymore and if they are some pricey aftermarket ones then a little nut isn't going to stop a determined thief. I think they are far more hassle then they are worth.
