I'm currently in the process of part ex' my car and I just remember the log book is in my mothers name. Will she have to be there to transfer it over or can I do it without her? Also If I wanted to register the new cars log book in her name would she have to be there also?

No idea how this slipped my mind. I will be calling them tomorrow but thought I'd check here see if any of you folk would know what I need to do.

Any help is appreciated. :)

How about instead of spending money changing your car, you sort your insurance out properly and use your money to pay for that?

Car insurance firms are rejecting a thousand claims a year as some parents and children lie to save money, says the Financial Ombudsman Service.
A fraud called "fronting" occurs when a young person has a car in their own name, but the insurer is falsely told that a parent is the main driver.

(Old article, but you get the idea)

The car is in her name though.....

So is the insurance and YOU are the main driver but not listed as such, this is where it is illegal.

Rubbish.

The insurer will still pay out for the third party's claim and that is all you should be concerned with.

Which has then also happened that the costs have been reclaimed by the insurer from the first party. Making insurance very much pointless.

On that basis, why don't we all put our cars to our grandfather's name and add ourself as the named driver?

It's one thing to add someone else as a name driver to bring down the insurance, another to have someone else as the main driver when you drive it the most, the fact that you are paying for it is irrelevant.

It is fronting, it is illegal and it is a very bad move...this is why. ;)

We both us it as much as each other. Also what the point of paying to have an additional driver if they are expected to hardly drive it? If I would be insured to drive it then whats the problem? Unless it states I can only drive so many miles a year in it?
