LOG: PS3 YLOD Fix

If you read the thread then you'll understand exactly why you need to use a heat gun. You're about to save 300 quid, so I'd say that's worth reading a thread for 10 minutes.

There are other methods like my post #53 in this thread but you need the equipment to solder that method. However that would literally be the most sure fire way of getting a "permanent" fix.

Please do keep us posted mate. May help a lot of people out and save them some greif.

Also let us know if it's overheating (fans blowing higher than usual) and if it ever dies let us know how long it lasted. At a guess... it won't die from heat EVER since they're using leaded solder.

I think it was 160 quid with a 30 day guarantee. What astonished me was that there were tons that failed again a few weeks after their re-flow.

I just can't believe they still claim this isn't a common issue.

NOOO!!!

That completely goes against the lead solder theory; about how the lack of lead in current solder prevents it from sealing back together when heated close to melting temperature and causes microscopic fissures.

Mate I'm so sorry to hear that, it's horrible news and especially when you took such a by-the-book route to fixing the YLOD.

I wonder what happened?

Well I think I'm going to take a leaf out of Keiron's book and pay to get my PS3 reballed.

Found this guy on eBay, he's got great reviews and even uses leaded solder. The fix will put me back by $100 which is a lot but a new PS3 would cost about three times as much.

Better get this bag of bricks bubbled wrapped and ready to ship.

The process of REBALLING is just a bit more complicated. First, you disassemble the PS3 down to the motherboard and clean it thoroughly. Then you apply heat to the chips and remove them from the board. Using a desoldering vacuum or desoldering braid you remove all the former solder balls that the chips were setting on. After you finish the board you need to clean the chips and prepare them with tacky flux. Next you need to place the the chip inside the reballing device and place the appropriate BGA stencil over it. Now come the balls, DaggerPCs uses leaded .65mm and .60mm which are exactly the same as the factory solder balls but, these balls contain lead which can easily withstand changes in temperature and return to there original shape without cracking. After the balls are placed, heat is applied to fuse balls to the chips and finally the chips are positioned over the motherboard and heat is again applied to fuse the chip to the board. DaggerPCs has switched to only using this reball process because it is a permanent fix, and the only problem with PS3's over heating is resolved by this process. DaggerPCs is proud to be able to offer a one year warranty for this process.

If it hasn't become clear to anyone yet, it's the lead free solder that causes the PS3 to YLOD after constant re-heating. Here's a great picture to show you the difference between leaded and lead free.

I took the plunge with that eBay listing just before I posted about it on here, after reading his feedback and the questions he's answered and made visible in the listing he seems credible. I'm still waiting for him to send me his shipping address!

Also I believe it's quite important that the PCB is secured to a jig when reballing takes place, to avoid the risk of warping the board as the RSX is removed.

.. yes the fault is caused by cracking of non-leaded solder balls...BUT my understanding is this is accelerated because the motherboard warps and flexes with heat!

I'd recommend, if you send your console off for a repair, that you make a tweak afterwards to increase the fan speed and replace thermal compound on the CPU heatspreaders to ensure heat levels are kept down!

That's good to know, I haven't come across that point. I'll ask him if he uses a jig to secure the board and explain the worry about the mobo warp potentially being an additional cause.

Alex - Do you possibly have a link to tweak the fan speed?

There might be but I searched very hard for a solution and I'm 90% certain that there isn't a way.

I've tried:
(a) copying files from one to another but Windows doesn't recognise the data on the HDD and there's a risk of Windows changing the HDD signature so the PS3 won't accept it (hasn't happened to me but a few on here warned me about it).
(b) switching HDDs from one PS3 to another

The best way is to connect the two PS3's together with a CAT5 crossover cable and your PS3 will ask you if you would like to perform a full backup.

However, that solution will only work if you bring your YLOD PS3 back to life and transfer the data before it YLODs again. Just follow the Gilksys videos that I posted on here.

If he re-flowed your PS3 then it's a ticking time bomb mate. You'd be best of buying a PS3 Slim and backing up the entire HDD from your zombie PS3 to your slim using a crossover cable.

I sent mine off a to be re-balled by daggerpc but his communication sucks! It took about three days to get a shipping address from him.

He should have received it last Friday but the lack of communication is a little scary. This guy went from 0 PS3s to 80 in the space of 3 months so Im sure he's inundated with emails and texts.

Hopefully should be getting mine back by the end of next week. At this rate you can't even tell.

Hopefully he's right about the circuit just using a pulse-stretcher, if so, you shouldn't need to build a Pulse Width Modulator (PWM). A single JK Flip-flop can double the pulse width. You can buy those in IC form for about 45p.

Just tie the J and K pins high and connect the PWM signal to CLK, then the PWM signal is doubled at the Q output.

I tried emailing, phoning and texting daggerpc and still haven't got anything back. :(

He's changed his ebay page to say any items received by Dec-1 will be returned by Dec-27 since he's receving about 5 PS3's everyday. Mine should have arrived by Nov-19 at the absolute latest, so I'll wait until Dec-20 until I take further action.

EDIT: Just noticed his ebay comments, they were all positive until December. Now he's getting negatives and people are claiming FOURTY FIVE DAYS with no response.

Thanks for asking Alex!

I still haven't had any response from him, even after politely threatening him with a police report. Here's the note I've sent to him:

Hello Branden,

- OFFICIAL NOTICE -

I've really tried hard to contact you directly and haven't been successful. Is everything ok?

Obviously with no news I can only assume the worst so please consider this as my last ditch attempt of asking you for a status update about my order.

I’m sorry but if you do not send me a status update about my order by Dec-17 then I have no choice but to file a complaint to Paypal and eBay. I will also be forced to file a police report for a stolen Playstation 3.

I apologize if this seems strong but I have tried to call you on (9xx-8xx-7xxx) eleven times, text you seven times, emailed you four times, asking for a status update. I have received no status update what so ever.

My PS3 was posted to you for re-ball on November 5th and you received it on November 16th.

Branden, I trust that you are a decent guy and especially with the excellent feedback you have. All I need is an update, did you repair my PS3 and when will you post it??

I just got a message back from daggerpc. Turns out he had a death in the family and has had to tend to family, which is why there is an entire backlog.

He's offered to refund the entire cost (inc. shipping) and post the PS3 back to me. If he's offering that to everyone that's one hefty bill he's going to be paying... 30 PS3's at $17 a pop!!

He asked me to open an eBay claim... which I found quite odd.

This entire eBay PS3 reball is turning out to be a nightmare.

In mid December he claimed that his mother had passed so was tending to priorities, however he started a new listing (under his user name) for the same service!

Now he's disconnected his phone, he's ebay user ID is no longer in use and I'm seeing several other listings under a different name using the exact same title.

I opened an eBay dispute and eBay refunded me the service and shipping costs, but when I asked about receiving my PS3 they told me to contact the police. I have his name, number and some apartment address.

His eBay user name had been opened since 2002 so it didn't look phonie and he also had 100% positive feedback at the time. About 20 of those were for this service! So I've emailed him again, giving him 2 weeks to post it back. Hopefully he will but if I don't get by the end of the month I'll be filing a police report.

I'm not alone! - this linked thread is quite revealing.

What a shame. I just feel lucky that I was given the PS3 and didn't fork out $600 (that's how much the original owner paid).

Normally I'd say sure to running the story, but this guy looks like he's been fairly decent until December (after reading through the linked thread in my last post). So it's best to leave it in case he wasn't lying about the passing of his mother.

I got home last weekend to find a big box on my doorstep, I picked it up and to my surprise it had DaggerPC on the box.

He had printed off a generic letter and taped them to the box. It practically said that the PS3 may or may not be fixed and he apologizes for the waste of time but has provided a full refund.

So essentially that's pretty cool. However, after reading through the linked thread there's a lot of people who have received a PS3 but it wasn't theirs! So cautiously I hooked up all the cables and tried to power up the PS3...

Nothing. Not even a blinking yellow light. The only issue it had previously was the YLOD, I know because I repaired it and it was fully functional until it overheated again after a few months.

So who knows if he sent my PS3 back, if it belonged to someone who re-flowed about 20 times and took no care about it, if it is actually mine but he just forgot to connect a ribbon. No idea.

When I get chance I'll dismantle and reconstruct it from scratch. I just hope it's something simple not someone else's PS3 with PSU issues or additional issues to the solder fissures.

At least I've got a PS3 back!

Selfishly I'd love you to be the guinea pig and try that company and see how it goes. I've had mine sitting on my lab bench with the hope of one day re-balling.

Why did you find that company to be reliable?

PS: I started this thread to help people backup their lost data and retrieve disks. Since then I've tried re-balling options but that's a little deviation from the original YLOD fix intent. Be nice if I could edit the title to add [TEMP]
