Do I need any special software to do this other than XP Pro? Basically I want to be able to log onto the server at work over my broadband connection and work as I would do normally. They have a fixed IP address broadband connection, a hardware firewall and a router, then the server.

If anyone could talk me through how to do this it would be dead handy.

Thanks

You'd almost certainly need a VPN setup, so they'd need a VPN server of some sort setup at their end so you can 'dial in' and connect to it.

The downside of a VPN is that you are directly linked to their LAN.
so if your PC is compromised, then so is their network.

Some firewalls have a VPN client, likewise some routers can act as VPN endpoints.
Win2K/Win2K3 servers can be set up as a VPN host too.

One alternative is a SSL link using your browser (see http://www.remotelyanywhere.com/)
- less likely an infected PC will affect the server, and way easier to setup

Some people like the various flavours of VNC.

There are pros/cons of each.

The best way to do this would be to setup a hardware vpn connection between you and the office. When Im remotely working from home I can use my Email and files as though I were in the office.

If im working on bigger files I have offline folders that I can sync when Im next back in the office.

What kind of things are you looking to do from home? Check email and grab some documents etc?

Not too worried about being compromised as we've got good virus checkers and sensible people using the computers. I'd rather go the VPN route as it's built in isn't it?

Email is fine as that's not coming through the server but they run some software that is hosted on the server and goes out as clients for everyone logged on. I know there will be a bit of a delay but it should still work. I also want to use the shared folders and printers.

I wasn't sure if you could do it with some clever befiddlery of IP addresses as they have a fixed IP address. How do you go about setting up the VPN then?
