Hi, bought these speakers form overclockers.co.uk about a month ago, and i was amazed by there sound quality, but i am experiencing a problem at high sound levels and i am wondering weather i have a faulty unit.

When the volume is turned up to about 16 out of 20 bars or w/e there called, and i then have the subwoofer on about half and sometimes full, i hear this kind of sound coming form the subwoofer, it happens on strong bass, if you tap 2 of your fingers on a wooden table 1 after each other, thats what the sound coming from the subwoofer sounds like, and i dont think its an issue with sound quality or interfierence, it sounds like hardware within the subwoofer, maybe the speaker is defective i dunno :\

has anyone else with this speaker system experienced it? anyone have an idea what it could be?

I've got these, had them for a few months. I can't say I've heard of this problem before. Is it like double bass or distortion your hearing from the sub?

Sounds to me like its faulty. Has it just started happening or been like this the whole time?

i had it since i got it, i am thinking about getting overclockers.co.uk to replace it, but dunno how to and i dont want to be withought these speakers for a long period of time coz they rock!!

i dont know if its distortion becouse the sound coming form the sub seems the same just with this added wierd sound as i describes in the frst post.

Move the sub away from radio fields/your pc/anything electrical.

Is it on a surge protector?

If all fails contact logitech directly.

the sub aint on a surge protector, i have allready contacted logitech.

the sub is about 1.3M away form the computer, the sub aint going to fail, its just at hihg levels i get that wierd noise as described in first post, and that noise just cant be interfierence, it sounds like hardware, is it possible to unscrew the front and take the speaker out to have a look at it?

clicking....at high volume....it might be the the cone hitting the stops because your pushing it too hard. Can you can a look at what the cone in the subwoofer is doing when you hear this sound?

Do you mean by "pushing too hard" that he might be having the volume too high? I've had these babies on FULL volume, full bass and everything after a night on the town some mates came back to mine and we had the tunes blasting till 5am in the morning. Yeah the whole street could hear it and my neighbour threatened to called the police.

Whoops.

They go prety loud and I didn't notice any clicking, distortion or anything else bad. My desk was sliding accross my wooden floor though... :p

ah, yea at high volume i was looking in at the sub's speaker and it was like moving back and forth pretty rappidly, i think when i heard it, the middle of the speaker was more in, but still, this is a 188watt system and the bass at that level is barely more than the 80Watt sony subwofer downstairs on the home theatre setup :s, does it do damage hitting the stop thing?

i bet all people with the Z5500's have had some sort of complaint, i got a letter through the post from the district council becouse someone complained lol, what boring people like aorund me that like to complain.

lol, sliding accross your floor, that would be a good sight to see :p, i can have the speakers on full 20 bars, only on some songs the speakers destort when i push it onto 10-11 BOOST.

Scott, what type of music were you playing, andcan you name some specific tracks you were playing when the system was at full? then i can try em and see what happens.

Anything by the prodgy here. Mostly remixes with HEAVY bass. Had mine on full, but only twice now. Full boost and full sub limit. My window nearly fell out, but the speakers were crystal clear, even on my onboard sound ;)

Oh and my crt monitor fell off the desk onto my bed luckily. :x THere is quite a hell of a lot of vibration!

songs by massive attack are good at throwing at low bass.

i had it going full pelt before with abit of guns n roses. no complaints either which was rather good! :D
crystal clear sound at full, was even clear in the street :p

Trance and hard trance. Usually listen to www.di.fm but they're low quality streams unless you pay. Armin van Buuren and Tiesto are examples of the beats I play on my system. Some harder stuff when I'm in the mood.

untill you have something to boast about;)

willhub, if you want somethign to stretch the sub without being so 'loud', try childhood dreams by nelly furtado. either that, or just play some test tones thru foobar2000:)

HAHAHA Nice!!

Well yeah that's a bit extreme. How much was that?
only on some songs the speakers destort when i push it onto 10-11 BOOST.
Holy ****! Are you serious? I've never ever ever had to set my speakers into the boost mode (apart from when using headphones). At full volume on my windows volume panel and at full surround volume with the bass at about 75% and the master volume at full (not boost) is so loud that you cannot talk with someone standing beside you, even if you shout. At full bass its when stuff starts falling off shelves/desks.

And I'm talking about some serious volume, my neighbour said the pictures on his walls were bouncing and my room is not even directly on my neighbours room, there's another big bedroom between us.

If you have all your volumes set to full AND with boost mode at full and its not very loud then there must definately be a problem.

BTW, what sound card are you using?

of course, there is another explination. If there's a clicking and things arent very loud then it could be clipping at the pc end, and not the speakers.

willhub, make sure you have all the equalisers and all that rubbish sound processing stuff on your pc turned off and set all the volume sliders up full. see if that helps. IT could be that something is driving the signal too hard at some stage on the pc and causing it to clip, which you'll hear as clicking sounds.

Its pretty hard to pinpoint without hearing it for ourselfs though.

Scott - its real lol. There's another 12" sub sitting no the floor:)

am using crap intergrated sound, at 10-11 on boost with some songs the speakers destort, but i never had sub above 2 when on boost.

how much it cost to get a decent 12" sub?, on ebay i seen somthing like 15" 5000w sub for £200, wanted to get it, but i dont know anyhting about amps and stuff and were to get em.

and even at that loudness i can hear myself talk but it's very loud, but i dont find it loud enough, maybe i just have bad hearing?

search for this song called Poison, its not an old song, this dance crap song, cant remember if it is poison or somthing, but try to find it, turn your sub up full and then put volume up to about 16-20bars, still nothing wierd coming form the subs?

also, if i dont have use the equilisers on my comp, everyhitng sounds crap coz of the sound chip.

So nice, I bet parties in your house are ace

It wasn't me who asked if it was photochopped, it was willhub.

I asked how much it was, but now you've just told me you've got some subs on the floor too. How much you pay for the whole lot? If you don't mind me asking :)

Equilisers on a system like the 5500's arn't really required and can usually make it worse anyway. I'm using the Audigy2 ZS sound card using coaxial cable. The Audigy was never really designed for the 5500's but after some tweaking and research I've got it all set up properly. There's settings that let me use the 5500's built in decoder rather than the one on the sound card and other stuff. If you've got a crap sound card, this might affect the overall performance.

well, try it anyway please will. eq's dont do anything for sound, if if you push eq's up remember that you HAVE to lower the overall voume by 1db for every +1db adjustment you make on the eq, otherwise it will clip the sound. Eq's are crap.

oooh so it was lol. umm, well that sub is actually about 6 years old now. its built like a tank and still going strong. the woofer itself cost me ~£130 new. The box which i built really only cost me about £5 for the wood and many hours trying to build it lol.

my system comprises of:
yamaha rx-v630rds (£350 new)
pair of mission m71i's on atacama stands up front(£120 for the lot)
eltax center speaker (free)
extax bi-polar rear speakers (~£25)
denon pma100m 100w RMS amp driving the two subs

and that's about it:)

jeeze, how much you actually pay alltogether?, whats total wattage of those subs?

oh, now i can have the sub on full now i put the equilizers all to 0 lol.

i think i had sub on +12db

wattage of the subs is around 400w RMS for one and 2502 RMS for the other, though i wouldnt read anything into that. wattage of the speakers doesnt mean anything:)

edit:so is it working now? lol
