LOL

i feel sorry for some people, because who says everyone who uses ebay has to be or is completely sain (or however you spell it), Because you cant deny the sellers intentions are to trick the buyer, but on the other hand if the person who bought it is all there, then i would happily laugh in there face :)

A scam doesn't have to be illegal, or even involve telling a lie.

This is a scam because the seller is hoping that someone will think they are buying a PS3. It's not a particularly good scam, because you'd have to be pretty foolish to fall for it, but none the less it looks very much like a scam to me.

Unless you are trying to suggest that it is agenuine attempt to sell the box (to someone who wants to buy just the box)?

I would say those disguised where it isn't clear on the outset are scams, this is somethin else, misleading maybe?

Of course this is a scam, there is a clear intent to deceive. Trying to say that guy is genuinely trying to sell someone a box for £250 without relying on a mistake on the buyers parts is ridiculous.

Amusing though ^_^

Sorry but I can't see how this is a scam, or a trick. It says its the box in the title, and out of the whole 3 lines of text in the ad one of them states is is the box only. I don't see how the seller is going to con anyone when being totally honest. If anyone believes it is a console then they are clearly stupid.

Unless the intention of the seller is to sell a box to someone who actually wants to buy just the box, then it is a scam.

In this case, I think its fairly clear the intention of the seller is to try and sell a box (albeit not illegally) to someone who thinks they are buying a PS3. Hence why it is a scam. :)

No-one is saying its a good scam :p

It's a very basic, simple scam that revolves around one thing - stupidity/naiivity. Doesn't mean it's not a scam.

I would imagine that the seller intends the scam to work as such:

Get someone else to put in a £100 bid
Someone stupid will come along and think -
'...it can't just be the carboard 'box' that is being sold, especially if someone else is paying £100...'
'...maybe 'box only' means the actual PS3 'unit' and no games?!...'

Or possibly most likely...

'....OMG a PS3 for £100 - bargain, BUY BUY BUY!!'

Still a scam imo, just not a particularly clever one.... :)

People using their parents credit cards and going "lol, PS3 leetness for £250! haha noobz!", without reading a SINGLE line of the description, or, at is stupidest, the title!

How can that be defended? Scam or not, couldn't give a monkies, the basic human intelligence to read or even comprehend anything on that item was lacking. If it was a serious bid, i despair. Would anyone here sign a mortgage contract because it said "house" in the title? Well, probably it seems.

What if i want to sell my mint Amiga 600 box? Am i tricking people then? It's kind of a good thing to have if you have an Amiga without one, i keep all my boxes, infact, i'd buy one for my Master System if i could.

However, i do not know what the starting bid was, if it was like £0.01, there's no excuse.

I agree

I think it's been mentioned a few times, but the winning bid was almost certainly by someone who had no intention of paying and was just making sure no-one else fell for the 'scam'.

I don't think there is any suggestion that anyone here would have fallen for this scam - quite the opposite actually

Then you'd hopefully make your advert seem less like a scam ;) Otherwise you risk having your auction ruined by a fake, non-paying bidder, like in this one....

As someone else pointed out - it's not hard to be ULTRA clear...

Playstation 3 BOX - Playstation 3 console IS NOT INCLUDED

I know that the seller does state 'box only' - but he deliberately pushes this as far down the page as possible....

Basically the auction got ruined by someone who felt it looked like an attempt at a scam.

However, i do not know what the starting bid was, if it was like £0.01, there's no excuse.

Not sure what the starting bid matters for - a lot of things start at £0.01, even if they are worth a lot more.

^ I suppose, but he could have made in clearer, as I said before. ONLY THE BOX in bold, and NO PS3 CONSOLE INCLUDED also in bold.

^^ Haha.. what the hell..

It is very misleading but it clearly states that it's a box in the title and the description. Obviously it was set up as the "this is a box" or w/e in the description was a few lines down, but to me, it's a valid sale.

Although I would probably think otherwise If I was stupid enough to bid that much haha :P

how is it a scamming attempt!?!! it says CLEARLY that its just a box, in the title and in the description :/

It HAS to say 'box-only' in the description, otherwise the 'scam' wouldn't work :p

The whole idea is that the seller isn't technically doing anything wrong - he is selling exactly what he says. But he's trying to do so in such a way that he hopes someone will misunderstand what they are buying, and that they will bid based on wanting to get a PS3. He HAS to say that its 'box-only' to cover his back - but he's banking on someone being stupid.

As far as scams go, it's certainly not a good one - and it's not likely to fool many people.

But if anyone thinks this is a genuine attempt to sell just the box, to someone who actually wants to buy just a box....then I'd say you're probably being as naiive as the fool who potential might have bought it thinking it was a PS3 ;) :p

How can that have even got 21 bids though. I remember when the whole "link" sellers where in full force and they were going at like £200+ for most things
