Hi all,

Have a HD555 headphone + xonar DX card.
Looking to get a desktop amp for volume control and better sound (if possible?),

Any suggestions please?
Thanks

What about the fiio Alpen. Just a suggestion. You wouldn't need the soundcard then or you could just disable it in Windows.

The recent E17 is an updated version of the company's earlier E7, with a new chipset adding 24/92 kHz support over USB and 24/192 kHz compatibility over S/PDIF.

Thanks, looks good but ideally looking for something £40 or less.

Main purpose of the amp is to shut my desk drawer up as at the moment the large headphone input>3.5mm jack is too long.

So looking for amp with:

Powered from mains.
Connects to soundcard via a direct 3.5mm jack.
Has a normal larger type headphone jack on front.
Volume control.

Can't seem to find anything that meets the above,

Kind regards,

Richer Sounds sell a Btech BT928 for £30. Can't think of anything else that does what you need that isn't either portable, £60-£70 or rubbish.

Edifier do a desktop headphone amp; the HA11. Not seen many comments on it, but those I have were not that positive. Can only be bought from China it seems, and with postage is near or over £50.

Not sure you are going to see any improvement in sound quality. Not for what is a low price for a desktop headphone amp. There are some mini class T amps in your price budget, which you might see if you are looking on the famous auction site. Some have a headphone socket. They are primarily designed for speakers though. The ones that do have a headphone out, it's there for convenience only and offers no real sound quality. Having used one, great for small desktop speakers, definitely poor for headphones.

FiiO E9, would have been a very good choice. That was around £70 though, and looks like it's been replaced with a more expensive E09K model.

Many thanks for reply, I seen the FiiO E9 and you are right - it seems ideal.

Just to confirm,,

It connects to soundcard via 3.5mm and has the headphone large type socket for direct connection (i.e no need to an adapter)? And it is powerd via mains?

Kind regards,

Yes, it uses 3.5mm for input and RCA for output to any speakers that might want to be used. It has 6.35mm headphone socket on the right side and is mains powered.

About the fiio e6, I have one with a pair of audio technica ATH-M50's and while it does improve the sound slightly it changes the sound signature slightly and adds a bit of distortion. Very good for the £20 I paid for it right enough. I would pay the extra money for the Fiio E11. That's what i'll be doing soon.
