Looking for a new internal SSD

So I've had a 500GB SSD up and die* on me without warning and I'm looking to replace it. Since it was reasonably full I want to step up to a 1TB (at the very least) so that there's some more headroom.

The drive is primarily used for gaming, which is why I'm looking at SSD as opposed to just a decently fast HDD.

With prices being stupid I'm fishing about to see what will get me the best for my money with a reliable drive.

I can see that Samsung 870 EVO is around the £200 mark for 1TB
Meanwhile KingSpec and Lexar (Lexar NS100) are closer to the £100 mark for 1TB

Is there any real world value in paying double the price for another Samsung drive? Or are there any other quality manufacturers worth considering right now?

*likely going to be another thread in a bit when I've another drive asking how to clone/copy data off since at present it just fails to register properly and causes the whole pc to hag/lag when booting up/shutting down/doing anything that gets close to the drive

PNY CS900 1TB can be picked up for around £100 ~ £120.

Does your board have an M.2 slot however? This would be a better option.

For cloning the drive, I would use Macrium reflect but you need to have a functional drive to clone from to begin with.

Otherwise you are looking at trying to recover files from it with any of the various free tools available if it’s still being detected.

Right now I'm just looking to replace what I've lost plus a bit of storage expansion. If I were getting a new M2 I'd be wanting to really expand on my storage considerably. Plus I technically don't have a spare M2 slot (I do but its one that's shared with graphics card in some form so if I use it I lose some graphics performance/speed). The only other option for an M2 is a pci expansion card, but the only slot I have for that has a sound card in it (I technically have two slots on the pc, but the other is blocked by my graphics card).

So I'm very much just looking to replace the SSD within the system.

Would the PNYCS900 be sacrificing any performance such a DRAM for the cheaper price?

Doesn’t have any DRAM no but you would be pushed to tell the difference a lot of the time. Depends on your budget really!

I would go with a M.2 drive personally but that said, loading times over SATA III will not really be noticeable.

Is this a boot drive plus gaming drive, or just a storage drive?

The problem with SATA is that very few drives still exist and the better ones have a big premium.

Lexar used to mainly put Micron flash in their drives and were decently reliable, but they're Chinese owned now and could use anything. To be fair, that's most of the market that will do the switcharoo, especially at the bottom end.

The 870 Evo is a known quantity, since Samsung largely own their supply chain, but the reliability record of that drive isn't spotless either.

You could go half-way and get Crucial's BX500, that's been on offer a few places lately. It used to be one of the better budget drives.

nah, there are a number of revisions for the BX500. all of the 1TB variants use QLC nand. I would strongly advise to avoid. basically this is no better than any of the chinese drives

Thee reason I said that, is they used to have a decent controller and should use Micron flash, which is a bit better than random controller and QLC.

Pretty much buy based on capacity. SATA or NVME is pretty irrelevant for games, so whatever offers the most capacity for the money.
