Hi Everyone.
Im hoping some of you lot can help me out:
Im thinking of getting rid of my Civic (06, 2.2 Diesel).
Basically its costing me a fortune to run, and since replacing my old W reg Focus, im practically skint all the time! lol.

So, im wondering, does anyone have any advice on what cars are worth looking at.

Ideally, i'd like one that has the same 'umph' as the Civic, and with similar fuel efficiency....

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance all. :-)

How does an 06-plate 2.2 Diesel cost too much to keep running? Have you got it on finance or something? I can't imagine it has any additional running costs other than fuel and annual servicing...

Anyway, give us a budget.

Average service for my focus was costing me upto 300.
Upto now the Civic has cost me 400-500 per visit (x2 upto now), and Honda upto now have charged me rediculus prices for just checking minor things out!:(

Right-ho, seems like a major reflex reaction for such a minor increase in costs, £400 extra over 20k (given two services), hardly lots.

You used to spend £300 per service on the focus?

That would be a max of £600 for two services for the focus?

You now spend a maximum of £500 per service on the civic?

That would be a max of £1000 for two services for the civic?

£1000 - £600 = £400 / 2 = £200 extra per service or £400 extra in total?, and thats as a Maximum diff between the two cars

Given the service schedule on the Civic and Focus is around 10k then this is for two services or 20k's worth of millage, an extra £400 over this distance is hardly breaking the bank is it?

Or if it is breaking the bank you seriously went into car ownership with your eyes closed, also why are you even taking the civic to the main dealer?

Keywords are "upto".
Focus never cost me more than £300. Averaged about 100-200 iirc.
The Civic has never cost me less than £400.

Taking the Civic to the main dealer as surely from a 'selling on' point of view, its better?

Surely got to weigh it up though? If its costing more now and unlikely to save that amount come selling time well then no.

I would never take my car to a dealer to service as I get mine done for the price of parts. So even if I lose money come selling time, it will be out weighed by the amount I have saved over the years.

Good point i suppose.
But i dont know of any good independant garages around my area....

Anyway.
Sugestions on cars...Im thinking either Focus or a Ibiza.
Had Focus, loved it, driven a Ibiza, good laugh.

Thoughts?

I do not see how a civc is costing noticeable amounts of extra money to run if you are basing it on service costs, as pointed out above we are talking a few hundred quid over the course of 20k+ miles!

Anyway, why not just get another focus? They are about the cheapest to run and most reliable cars in their class, you liked your old one, the question answers itself :)

will the 'savings' in changing another car not be dwarfed by the potential money you have lost in depreciation?

Heres a good example for differences in running costs:
4 new break disks/pads on a Focus: £200-250ish wo/labour
4 new break disks/pads on this Civic: £1000 wo/labour

Now either my dealer is charging me extorionate prices, or somethings amiss...
Its the same with everything on it upto now, new wing mirror covering on a civic, fitted myself, £45, Focus: £8.

Saw an 08 Focus yesterday, 2.0L Diesel, looked very nice i must say.
How would a 1.8L Diesel or a 2.0L Focus compare in terms of perf to my Civic?

Is it just me or is that getting close to M3/M5 money for brakes?

OP, you are being absolutely shafted by your dealer. My suggestion is taking it somewhere else. You should not be paying even half of what you are for a service.

EDIT: WTF, just noticed it is WITHOUT labour.

Ok, seriously, OP, you need to improve your haggling skills. Either that, or just buy your brakes from the internet (circa £200) and get them fitted by an independent garage (£100?). Jebus, i didn't think anyone still took their car to the dealer for brakes (unless you're minted)! It's almost like taking your car to the dealer for tyres - you're just begging to be shafted.
