Would appreciate some help in formulating a build for a new computer set up. We are architects working with Autocad,Sketchup and possibly some other 3D software that has yet to be determined.Would like a graphics card that would run multi screen, plenty of RAM/storage and fast processor - I5?
Would like a 23 - 24" screen,decent keyboard,mouse etc.

Hi there,

Do you have a budget in mind?

I believe Autocad makes use of Nvidia Quadro graphics cards (which tend to be rather expensive compared to their gaming "geforce" cousins). You can go for the cheaper option of a gaming graphics card - but if you will be using autocad extensively (and professionally) then I think opting for a quadro does make sense. To give you an idea of price, a Quadro 2000 card (very similar to a geforce GTS 450) costs ~£360.

As for CPUs, the new Quad core Sandy Bridge Processors are the ones to look for. Pound-for-pound the i5 2500K is the best one to get, but if you have a large budget then the £70 more expensive i7 2600K is worth a look - its main benefit over the 2500K is hyperthreading, which will boost performance in heavily multithreaded applications.

Also, considering the applcations you mention are generally pretty CPU-heavy, overclocking the CPU will yield some performance increases. If you just buy a P67 board and a decent CPU cooler then you can do this yourself (it is pretty simple to do with the K series CPUs). If you don't feel so confident then you can buy a pre-overclocked bundle from OCUK.

Adding an SSD (so long as your budget can bear it) would also be a good move - as it does make loading any files and general usage of the PC feel so much quicker.

As for RAM, DDR3 prices are pretty low at the moment - you can pick up 16GB (4x4GB) for less than £160 (just under £10 per GB), two of these kits would be great.

For monitors, it really depends on budget - without knowing this I will just recommend a nice quality, good value screen that will work well for your uses. This Dell U2311H is a really nice bit of kit and uses a high quality IPS panel.

Spec help

Grateful for your swift attention to my request. Not sure about I5 versus I7 but will accept your advise. So far as the rest of the specification goes it seems fine for now - what kind of cost are we looking at for the spec you have advised?

Here is a full spec. Please be aware that the graphics card is just a placeholder - instead I would suggest going for the Nvidia Quadro 2000, which is about the same price as that GTX 580 gaming card, but unfortunately not available from OCUK.

I put in a good quality laser mouse and a basic keyboard. If you plan to do a lot of typing, then I would strongly suggest you try out a mechanical keyboard like this one.

As for i5 vs i7 - this review compares the two in a range of applications. My judgement is that at least some of the applications you will be using will take advantage of hyperthreading, which offers up to 25% performance boost in heavily threaded, CPU hungry applications.

Is a 400w PSU enough for that card aswell as everything else?

Aye, it will be plenty. The Quadro 2000 card is basically just a GTS 450 running different software, so its not a big power hog (rated at 62W). With this card and the rest of the spec (even if he overclocks the CPU to 4.5GHz) it won't come close to drawing 400W at full load.

Thanks for that-will keep my eye on comments posted here and get back to you. I must admit that i had reservations about PSU rating - i had i mind a 500W rating but am quite happy to take advise from somebody that knows far more about these things than i. Thanks once again and hopefully i will be back to you

Can we improve on this specification for my specific requirements? I have looked at the OCUK site today and there seems to be other options to consider - BenQ 24" monitor, Gforce GTX460 graphics card or Radeon 6970, Asrock P67 Extreme 6 motherboard Intel P67 (Skt 1155), OCZ Agility 120GB SSD, Samsung Spin point 1 TB SATA?
Would prefer to upgrade power supply for possible upgrade/additional hard drives for a later date?
Any benefit in waiting for the Bulldozer chips?

Nobody knows how Bulldozer will perform; there are no reliable benchmarks out at the moment. If it performs well against Intel's Sandybridge then it will drive prices down on Sandybridge chips, but if it under performs then prices could increase on Sandybridge.

Its pretty much a total unknown at the moment... Im not even 100% sure if it has a release date yet :(
