Looking to build a server (£200-£300)

Actually just realised I've a Toshiba 8.1 tablet that needs repairing, so that could probably be my client for testing policies etc.

Got 3x120gb and 1x60gb SSDs so that shouldn't be too much an issue. Ta for the RAM link, will take a gander now...

why not the HP microserver?

HP is 109.34 inc VAT after cash back with a G1610T , the T20 is 109.94 inc VAT after cash back and has a G3220, 500GB HD and more expansion options for drives and cards. Yes the G1610T isn't massively outclassed by the G3220 in general, but unless you really need a smaller footprint and slightly lower power usage, then the Dell wins. If you want to go diskless you can get the dell for 89.99 and that's without allowing for the 2% cashback at present.

The cashback for the model with the Xeon... has INCREASED to #110, from #70 and is valid until the end of February - I just checked on Dell's website.

The only problem now is searching for somewhere that still has them in stock ;)

I've noticed the Dell PowerEdge T20 4GB RAM 1TB HDD 3.2 GHz Xeon for £316 on a popular website. Still with the £110 cashback it's still a good deal isn't it? Am just deciding on this over the extra money spent on a Synology NAS.

Sounds like a great deal for me.

Cheaper than a basic Synology 4-bay NAS and it will be MUCH quicker / more useful.

The HP Gen8 with Celeron and 2GB RAM is sooooo much quicker than the Synology DS213j, and they were cheaper too... I have 2x Gen8s and 2x DS213js.

If I was buying now, I would pay the extra for the dell though - that processor and extra hdd is worth it, IMO.

Are Dell still doing the cash back deals as I can't find it anywhere on the Dell website. I have found plenty selling the server.

Yes, they are... if you scroll only a few posts back, I shared that they are valid until the end of Jan/Feb and for the one that the guy you quoted mentioned - the cashback has increased to #110 quid.

I can't post a link as they are an OcUK competitor... but google simply "Dell T20 cashback" and you will find the details on Dell's own website, along with the claim form.

I think I will pull the trigger on the Lenovo TS-140 as that seems more readily available than the Dell T20. Has anyone got any experience with it?

I have now that mine has arrived, it's a decent bit of kit. Has space for two 3.5" HDD inside the case with one filled. It also has to 5.25" bays with one already used by the removable laptop DVD drive. It's quiet and appears to run pretty well. :)

No it doesn't, the Dell has 4 bays...
Barely any point in buying a server with only 2x HDD bays
Oops, so it does (I missed the ones in the top :( )
Still though, I suppose you can get mounting kits to mount HDDs in the 5.25" bays of the Lenovo. Thats what I intend to do at some point in the future anyway as I can get hotswappable mounts :)
