Looking to buy a DSLR for travelling

careful of what?

i brought my 5d3 with 3 L lenses and left it on the beach unattended while i swim in the ocean in Hoi Ann vietnam :)

I still have it with me :P

maybe overkill for some but certainly nothing to be scared of bringing any type of DSLR abroad. Just insure it and use common sense.

Reading comprehension fail I think Jonney :p

Weight is not an issue for me by the way. Im not an old person or have any disabilities so i am able to carry a backpack that weighs over 10kg all day long in the hot sun.

i take my photogaphy quite serious and would be gutted if i missed shots on a place i probably never would come back to again

I never said that a DSLR isn't going to work but when traveling some people like to have a lighter and smaller kit, hence I said have a think about a DSLR vs a mirrorless.

I'm with you on this - I remember when you were discussing whether to take all your gear or not and I was one of the few that said just take it if you know what you are letting yourself in for. I 'm really wanting to go on a round the world trip (now I have a family this wont be for some time) and I would certainly be taking a good DSLR and lens set.

But not everyone has the same priorities or concerns. Some people don't want high value items, or want the weight, or want something that can fit in a pocket. These are valid concerns and a mirror less can help resolve them.

yes indeed you are spot on :)

Their are some small dslr lie the 100d as you mentioned that could fit the bill and depending on how serious u are in photography, it is up to the user to be fair :)

You and i would bring our whole set mate like a pro lol

Thanks for the input guys.
I went down to LCE earlier to have a go at some cameras. The 100D was very light and seemed to have good functionality but shooting in low light in the shop wasn't the best example.
I had a go at some compact cameras with manual functions which surprised me at how good they are.
I'd like to have a go with the nikon 5100/5200 to see what they are like compared to the canon. The IQ will be better i suppose but I'd like to have a feel of the weight.

What are the best rated CSCs around?

Ta

If you are going to consider a DSLR, and look at the Nikons, also check out the Pentax. Not as popular, but the K30 is smaller than any of the Nikons you mentioned, with more features e.g. Higher shutter speed, focus peaking, lens adjustment, etc.. Many of the Pentax primes are also much smaller than the Nikon equivalents.

Also check out this site for easy comparison of M43, DSLRs and other cameras.

Definitely go for mirrorless. When I went to Malaysia I wish I had one with me and after I arrived back home I sold all of my DSLR gear and bought a Fuji X-Pro 1. The IQ of the Fuji is better than my old 7D, too. Never looked back!

I've been putting some reading in over the last couple of days and the range of fuji cameras looks ideal
The three I'm looking at are:
X20
X-M1
X-A1

The A1 and M1 have a deal going at the mo where you can get a free 50-230 mm lens when you buy a kit.
However I can't really see much of a difference between the A1 and the M1 other than price??

The main difference is that one has a conventional Bayer-type sensor, and one has an X-Trans. The X-Trans has a different pixel array that supposedly negates the need for an Anti-Aliasing filter. Google and there's lots of discussion about Bayer and X-Trans. Neither is better, they are just different.

A comparison here:
