Hello,

I currently have

(main parts)

msi k9n diamond
msi 8800gt
4gig reaper extream DDR2
amd athlon x2 dual core 5600+ (2.8GHz)

it has been a couple of years since i last upgraded and now i just dont know what is good and what is not,

not to bothered about overclocking, just want a fast reliable computer as i am a web designer and by the time i get to the end of my day the computer is not so responsive, 101 open tabs and programs probbly dosent help lol

not sure if its even worth getting an upgrade

all i really need to change is the board and processor as the fastest CPU i can get for this board is the 6000+ wich dosent seem worth the upgrade,

This would be a nice step up, its AM2+ mobo and new AM3 tricore CPU (yes theyre backwards compatible), should be nice and fast. You didnt specify a budget so not sure if this is OK for you but if it were me this is the sort of thing Id be looking at stepping up to

AMD Phenom II X3 Tri Core 720 Black Edition 2.8GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail £120.74 (£104.99)
Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3 AMD 770 (Socket AM3/AM2+) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard + Battlefield 2: Complete Edition Game £69.99 (£60.86)
Sub Total : £165.85
Shipping cost assumes delivery to UK Mainland with:
DPD Next Day Parcel
(This can be changed during checkout) Shipping : £9.50
VAT is being charged at 15% VAT : £26.30
Total : £201.65

wow, less than i thought,
i was looking at the intel and the prices looked scary,

i have always had amd so this may be a good option for me, and at 200 its a bargin,

not seen the phenom cpus befor, been a while lol,

The tri core phenom is a good one. Clocks well too.

You might need a bios update in order to use the new phenom in the older board, but thankfully you have an X2 sitting around idle which would be perfect for this. Amd are doing very well with the cheaper components at present.

If youve got more money you can go for a 955 quadBE
alternatively you could get an AM3 board and new DDR3 RAM, its your call
If you have a budget in mind we can give you the best upgrade for that price

the processor looks good in the benchmarks, (i would be happy with this)

not to sure about the board as it seems to be a bit lacking, if you get what i mean,
any better suggestions for the mobo to match the AMD Phenom II X3

i currently have a 8800gt so sli would be a bonus but not esential, my current mobo cost me 120 so around that mark would be fine

just incase it matters,
i sream most stuff through my pc to 1080p hd tv for films and games,
i have a wirless setup in my house,
mad about my music
i like things to look nice

anyone got any improvments on this, keeping around same total

what about this mobo, as it seems to have a lot going for it

MSI 790GX-G65 790GX AM3 DDR3 VGA DVI HDMI 8 channel Blu-ray audio ATX Motherboard

any1 got 1?

Any brand preferance? I'm fond of Asus, picked them fairly arbitrarily a while ago and both boards from them have been good to me. Consequently I recommend Asus.
A wiser option would be to track down reviews of the boards and/or choose based on which features you want onboard.

15 minutes isn't really very long to wait for a reply before double posting.

i didnt mean it as a double post, i just found the other board and wanted to post it up to get some options,

as for brand,

i tend to always go for msi boards,

If you like MSI then yeah go for that board, its fine, but out of stock atm thats the only thing. TBH I think so long as its decent manufacturer theres little between them if theyre the same specs, some people have a preference for one brand over another but in reality theyre all very similar
