Hey guys,

I'm looking to upgrade my rig which is showing its age a bit now. I currently have a quadcore Q6600, 8gb ddr2 on a Asus P5K-E mobo and a 8800GT gfx card.

All the rest of of my stuff is decent and should be good to keep. I will use the system mainly for 3d modelling and working with image editing as well as gaming.

Budget is reasonably open, I want something pretty high end that I won't have to upgrade again for a fair while.

Any suggestions?

Theres nothing wrong with his current cpu,ram and motherboard, and looking at his uses:D a IPS panel screen will be great.

thanks for the replies. I was thinking about a new mobo, ram, gfx and cpu as I have had the current lot for 3 and a half years and figure its about time for an upgrade. I already have the hdd's PSU and OS etc as well as a decent monitor. But I am am open to suggestions if a new gfx card is all it takes then thats great too :D

The psu is a Coolermaster Real Power 700w Modular one.

Excellent.

In my opinion, if that Q6600 is still at 2.4ghz? then get a big heatsink on it and get it up to 3GHZ

Add in a much newer/performance GPU (GTX560ti, 6950 2GB, GTX570)

If you dont have a SSD? then a 60GB one will be great.

Hey stulid, doesn't the U2311H suffer terribly with ghosting? I mean, sure the colours and viewing angles are incredible, but wouldn't a gamer be better off with a 120Hz TN film?

Try looking in the monitor section, everytime there is a "whats the best 24" gaming monitor" this always comes up, and I think owners of this screen would flame you for saying that:p

And 120HZ has no effect on ghosting, its the response time in "ms" of the LED's that switch from colour to colour that affects ghosting;)

I know the 120Hz has no effect, I'm just saying that you can get a decent 120Hz monitor for the same price :). U2311H owners can seem to be a bit fanboyish, but most review sites (certainly tftcentral, who I put a lot of store by) say that it is a bit ghosty for FPS gaming. 8ms is a little slow when most TNs will do 2-3.

The SM2233RZ just seems to be a better choice for gamers as opposed to the U2331H, which seems more of a high res video / photo screen.

And ironically the first thread I just seen in the monitors section for the best 22"+ gaming screen, has you mentioning this exact screen!!!

Yes, because the guy asked specifically for IPS. I'd go for TN film if he hadn't specifically said he is switching over from TN film to IPS, and wants something with superb image quality. It is a fantastic screen, but I would still go for a TN film for gaming.

To copy his exact post:

I currently use a Benq FP241W which was pretty high end as I understand it.

But I now want a 16:9 instead of a 16:10 screen, around 22-24", excellent colour and IQ over response rate.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

...

how much do I need to spend to match the IQ of my current monitor, but in a 16:9 IPS screen?

Cool I'll have a look into just getting a gfx card then. I may of oc'd the cpu a bit when I first got it but I can't remember off hand as I'm at work if I did I certainly havent touched it since. I actually picked up an agility 3 ssd the other day which is another reason I was looking at an upgrade for the sata 3 which this mobo doesnt have. I've been looking into the possibility of getting a sata 3 adaptor but i'm unsure of how much benifit I'd get from one at the minute? all the reviews I've seen of the more budget ones seem to be all over the place on how well they work. I was thinking about just running it on sata 2 until I upgraded my mobo. however I might reconsider the controller now :)

Wait till the end of the year when Ivy bridge/Sandybridge-E is released.

Although that is true, you fail to acknowledge that the U2311H is still slower than any TN film monitor. Maybe you can't notice it, that's fair enough, but it's still true regardless.

I dont know if your bored and are trolling, but I dont own a IPS screen;) both are TN Samsungs:D and even i know after testing a IPS that its better.

Although that is true,

So im right and your wrong then.
