Lord British Presents

really? i had a rune book filled with locations of valorite ore, i would do a few runs a day to get valorite ingots for valorite armour. Unless they changed it later im pretty sure it spawned in the same place, there just wasnt very much of it!

IIRC the veins would stay the same until they were depleted (i.e. a certain number of "respawns"). After that they would randomly re-spawn as another level of ore.

graphics don't make an MMO the mechanics do and I'm confident lord british wont aim this at the lowest common denominator like a lot of mmo's of the past few years.

Unfortunately this doesn't look/sound like it's going to be an MMO :(

You've also got to consider that many publishers like to stick their noses in and have a say on a game to push it to be more profitable for them even if it goes against the original idea of the game.

Kickstarter doesn't mean a game will be crap, just that it doesn't necessarily appeal to the mass market. However, I do agree that many games are funded because of rose tinted glasses.

Looking from the other side of things, just because a game is funded by kickstarter doesn't mean that it's going to be good or even resembles what you thought the game was going to be like. If a publisher funds a game, they take the financial hit if the game is a dud - The backers take the hit from a kickstarter.

The 'classic' example is the Code Hero Kickstarter. The kickstarter was funded over a year ago. No rewards were sent out and the author went silent. He finally admitted that all the funding had been spent (not sure what on!). The development of the game is still continuing on a shoe string budget and won't be released any time soon. Not too sure where he's going to get the money from for the rewards now tbh. Obviously the backers are a bit miffed!

That's the perils of crowd sourced financing though

I fully agree with what you are saying, I don't think i've heard of a kickstarter project actually finishing yet either but then I don't follow it very closely. Too risky and resembles pre-order culture for my liking.

I also wasn't aware that "lord british" was a multimillionaire, read about him in a news story this morning. Makes you wonder why he's just not backing it himself if he has so much faith in it.

Probably because he has a family now and doesn't want to risk losing all his money as it will have implications for not just him any more.

Some interesting information in the latest update:

First, the game can be played offline, no connection required. The character used for the offline version of the game will not be useable in the online version of the game for obvious exploit/hacking reasons. We are going to investigate ways to export your online character to the single player version of the game but the offline character will not be importable into the online version.

Second, the offline single player version of the game for those who purchase it through KickStarter will not use any form of DRM. We had been holding off on committing to that because we don’t know what our final distribution system (Steam, GOG, etc) is going to be and some of them use DRM. We may have DRM of some sort on post-KS sales but we’ll commit to keeping KS versions DRM and “phone home” free for the single player version once launched.

Third, the offline single player of the game will not have any microtransactions. We know this is kind of a no-brainer since it is offline but we wanted to be perfectly clear on that since there was some vagueness in a few statements in one of our video chats.

So an online character is online only. I'm assuming will still be able to instance for a lot of the game and you'll still be able to play "single player" with it, but you'll always be connected to their servers.

Was always going to be the way really, it is near impossible to police offline characters going into an online environment. Smart move by them IMHO.

It doesn't sound anything great if I'm honest. I will hold off for now until more updates are given with more detail.

To be honest, anyone who's focusing on the graphics first and foremost is missing the point.

No I am not I like these sort of games to look good and it looked very ... well standard Unity ... like a 10 minute knock up job which does cause me concern if they've already invested time etc because it's indicative of problems - if I want to play a beautiful game that looks like a dog I'd play Dwarf Fortress!

It was done by programmers...they don't have a dedicated artist yet! I think judging the art style purely on that, which Garriott said was thrown together in 3 weeks in preparation for the kickstarter, is unfair on the finished product. But if you want to jump that gun, go right ahead.

How? The concept? The graphics?

All of it.

I was expecting something along the lines of UO2 reboot, but instead we have something that looks like it was made in 2002, with a split personality disorder.

Take minecraft for example, crap graphics, sandbox do what you like world, massive hit.

Graphics i can over look, but are we even sure this is a MMO?

I've played a lot of MMOs in the 15+ years I've been computer gaming, including UO and this game not only sounds terrible, but it doesn't bring anything new to the table and with an already over saturated MMO market, this is what we need.

I'll probably get flamed to death by the LB fan boys and UO die hards, but if it does come out, at least we'll have another niche MMO.

But free to pay Browser based and cross platform with tablets, i bet you.

But it's not an MMO mate, he has explicity said time and time again, this is not an MMO. It is firstly a single player experience, but with multiplayer aspects.

Not going to lie...Ultima Online pre trammel is the best gaming experience I've ever had, this actually looks worse than Darkfall/Unholy wars...

Hell, even Darkfall was decent.

Is anyone able to link/show the advertisement for the game shown in PCZONE?
It was a double spread which sold the game to me for years!!

Evere The Ready - Europa :)

Well it looks like this made close to 2 million which is pretty good going. Lets see what LB can come up with, his reputation is really on the line with this one.

First off - I apologise for bumping a thread last posted to April last year :)
Secondly - not sure if this is against forum rules or not. I'll take the chance and see if the ban/suspension hammer will fall.

Did anyone miss out on the kickstarter for this and wish maybe they had invested?
For a limited time I am able to "gift" founder level accounts to people. So the entry point account is at $40 and that gets you into the beta's and gets you a copy of the game and loads of other stuff. However as opposed to simply singing up on the site its $5 cheaper and you get the special items from the Kickstarter.

Anyway, not a scam - I think most people know how long I've been around here. All very legitimate. Yes I'd be getting a recruitment bonus, but if anyone is interested maybe they can let me know?

Mods - if this breaks any rules I apologise and please delete.
