I need to lose 20Kg, thats about 40 pounds.

Can anyone advise. I know excersie and eat healthy blah blah,

Any better ideas.

and class A drugs is not an option

Also what are your greatest weight lose achievements?

2 stone in two weeks, due to life changing events. It's not really an achievement as such, pretty senseless in retrospect, but was unavoidable. :)

As for achievements, hmm, lets see...I used to be very active, i actually 'enjoyed' excercise, that was the key. It was part of my lifestyle, not a means to an end. I would burn 1000 calories a day with ease, and think of it as pleasure. The sports i enjoyed, consisted of mountain biking, snowboarding and water skiing. They got me out the house, gave me a deeper appreciation for nature, and being extreme sports (to a degree), it was always thrilling.

Extreme sports aren't only extreme because of the danger factor, but also the sheer intensity of the cardiovascular workout thats endured when doing these kinds of things.

You need to find something that you can find enjoyable, which also helps burn the calories. A hobbie that you could enjoy for the rest of your days, that involved a cardio work out.

The mundane "go to the gym and feel the burn" approach to losing weight, never worked for me. It wasn't enjoyable for me at all, and it wasn't something i could see myself doing for any lengthy period. Although, some people love that approach, as of course, its a great way to meet new people.

You should know that there is no easy way to lose weight, and that short term goals are superfluous.

I lost 3 stone by buying smaller bowls and plates and eating 3 times a day with nuts/dried fruits to snack on during the morning and afternoon

What do you mean, better ideas?
You've already said it, exercise and eat healthily (have a calorific deficit to be precise) what's wrong with this approach?

I'm on the Slimming World diet. Basically, you don't mix proteins and carbs, but you can eat as much as you want. Also not drinking.

Lost 5 pounds in one week.

I guess Abz is a misnomer.

Burn more calories that you ingest, it's the only way to lose weight. That means diet and exercise if you want to do it properly and keep the weight off.

I've lost half a stone in the last three months but more importantly I've lost a third of my bodyfat and my bodyshape has improved.

I eat pretty much anything I want but I keep away from take away, fast food, and ready meals.

Try and stick to naturally low fat food and cook your meals from scratch. Then combine this with exercise and you'll be losing weight pretty quick. I myself sometimes go to the gym, but I'm normally out long distance running

This is true, and I can testify to it. All these rubbishy diets that tell you to do this and that etc etc are annoying.

If calories in < calories out you will lose weight.

It's that simple. Basically you have to stop thinking about it as a 'diet'. Think about it as a lifestyle change. You should be looking to ingest roughly 1500 calories a day regardless of what exercise you do if you want to lose weight [though you should ingest slightly more calories if you do more exercise].

Your meal plan for the day should go something like:

200 calorie breakfast
100 calorie mid-morning snack
200 calorie lunch
100 calorie afternoon snack
700-800 calorie dinner

You should start looking at foods and learning how much calories are in what you eat. Things like vegetables, rice etc have hardly any calories where bread, cheese etc have loads. Best to avoid things like that. Remember, it's not about how much you eat but what you eat.

You can drink however much water, diet tonic water, black coffee [not white coffee], you like.

Also - really watch your alcohol intake. It's OK to drink two nights a week, anymore than that and you won't really lose weight.

You should lose about 2-3 pounds a week on this. I know it doesn't sound like much but carry on and soon enough you will lose all the weight you want to. What's more you'll like your new lifestyle and feel great about yourself.

Are there any supplements you can take to assist the process? I'm not afraid of a bit of hard work - have been weight training for 2 years but the bulking process and a bit of a poor diet has seen the body fat get a little too high for my liking ;)

I've always used whey protein shakes to assist my workout and so wondered if there is anything "similar" for weight loss?

I've seen products such as CLA, thermobol etc but what they do isn't very clear from the websites.

Also, does anyone recommend any good sites for weight loss, particularly a calorie counter for common foods?

Use this website for calorie counting:

As for supplements, why do you need supplements? Just eat better as described. There is no magic/rush way to lose weight. You have to do it at a healthy rate.

I've read diets where you lose a stone in a week. Even if you do, you'll just put it back on afterwards. It's really important to change the way you eat/drink over a prolonged peroid, I can't stress that enough. If you do that, the healthier lifestyle will become your norm. You can still have a couple of evenings a week drinking/eating stuff you want.

My biggest achievement?

When I was 21, something tragic happened and I went from 16.5 stone to 12.5 stone in a month. The weight stayed off for about 6 months and slowly trickled back up to the point where I started eating **** again. I do NOT recommend that. I now need to lose about 40 pounds at least, same as you.

I'm doing:

200 calorie breakfast
100 calorie snack*
200 calorie lunch
100 calorie snack*
6-800 calorie dinner

* if I'm not hungry I won't eat this.

Once I've got a bit more time I'm going to start up exercise, sports, things like that.

It is extremely important not to crash diet, try magic pills, soups etc... They will not work. You will lose the weight but it WILL come back. Most of the time your protein intake is too low too. Slow and steady wins the race.

Apparently boxing is good for loosing weight?

You have to do it at t healthy rate.

This is very important.

Having changed my diet and my exercise programme (i.e. I've started doing some) I've lost 5kg in the last three months. It doesn't sound like a huge amount, but because I've done it properly it should be easier to keep off.

Mind weight it's a particularly good indicator, I tend to use body fat % and body shape (taking photos of yourself!) to monitor my progress, since I expect to lose more fat, but I don't expect to lose much more weight.

My best and only achievement is 2 stone in 5 months and I aim to lose 3.5 stone in a year. Once I have reached that target, i will decide if I'm still fat and if I want to carry on with the weight loss.

On a 'good' week, I have Special K for brekkie, Special K, soup or salad for lunch and a weight watchers or similar meal, or chicken and mushrooms for tea.

On a 'bad' week I will have a sandwich for lunch and the odd takeaway at the weekend - this way it stops me having mad cravings.

Exercise is swimming, and messing about with poi/ staff.

To keep a track, I weigh myself at the same time each morning (You aren't really supposed to do it every day but I'd forget if I did it less regularly) and monthly photos from the back, side and front.

When i have reached my target weight I will publish the photos :D

Cut out all sugar, it sends you blood sugars all over the place and you get cravings. Thus you eat more.

Cut down on carbs weigh it out. So you know you only have one portion.
To replace that bulk up on veg, carrots are dirt cheap and taste fantastic.
Eat protein throughout the day. Protein not only makes you feel full faster you feel fuller longer.

Variations, if you don't variety then you want stick to it.

Set a menu for the week and go shopping once a week. With a 2nd small shop to stock up on milk etc.

Don't eat bread, bread is not good for dieting. If you can cut it out. If not use things like pita bread, tortilla wraps etc. Again stick salad in sandwiches.

Also if your just cooking for yourself make enough for two meals, then you can take it to work. depending what it is stick it in a pitta bread, or just have some salad with it.

Like last night I made Satay chicken. The leftovers went in a pita bread with some cucumber for lunch today. Just keeps you having a variety at lunch time rather than the same thing every day. Also cuts down on cost a lot.

Make sure you have breakfast. A good non sugar cereal. If you are pekish through the day eat apples, canned peaches, canned pineapple, pairs, raw carrots. or anything else you like. Also remember most of the time when your hungry you are in fact thirsty. So try drinking before eating. Also have a pint of water/sqaush before you have a meal.

Also cut drinking down to two big nights a month. even one pint is over 200 calories.

You will. When you were eating crap you got used to eating crap so it became the norm. Now you are eating better you are re-attuning your body to eating better and it will become normal for you to eat well [of it hasn't already]

jdickerson - your eating plan is perfect. Though I'd recomend eating those snacks even if you're not hungry since by giving your body small snacks you are booting your metabolism. You will not lose weight quicker by skipping snacks, you may even slow the process down. I lost 3 - 3.5 stone in four months. If you like, I can help you with a diet plan.

Yes if you go to the GP, they can give you a tablet which helps prevent you absorbing fat/oils. However if you then eat too much fats/oils it will give most people the squirts.
They are releasing it for over the counter in boots, but it's half strength. Never tried it myself though.
