losing a dog,

My dog died after 16 years, she arrived at a time my parents were getting divorced.

She was always there when I needed her...i still get upset now (after 5 years) not being there with her in her final moments.

I'll never have another dog, I can't go through it again.

My condolences, i recently lost my 17 year dog about a month ago he will be missed but we had to put him down as he couldn't function.

Why are you trying to equate the loss of a dog with the loss of a child ? What the hell is wrong with you ?

*EDIT* Just realised I'm talking to Amp. Doh !

Because a dog becomes as much a part of the family as any human member does.
It isn't the same I get that, but the logic is sound to compare the 2.
Any dog you get to replace an old one will never be the same dog no matter what you do.

I was never much of a doggy person until I moved in with the current GF and we got 2 dogs, I honestly can't see me ever living in a dogless house ever again. My comments pretty much echo everyone elses, they annoy me to hell and back at times but I love them completely :).

I lost the dog that was a part of my life for the best part of 14 years. She died a couple of years ago

her name was Shadow. Lab/Great dane. she was a MASSIVE girl.

Enough weight to pull me over when she wanted too and I'm 15 stone...

She died suddenly from a kidney infection that gave her blood poisoning. Was no way to save her so they put her down in front of me. It was heart wrenching watching her eyes close and her take her last breath. But i am glad i was there. She kept her eyes on me till the very last moment and and i never lost that eye contact until she had gone.

She knew when i was unhappy, so i acted happy as could be until she was gone.

Damn you OP you got me crying now.

This post almost had me crying. Even though I have not lost a dog (yet) I completely relate to this post. I am going to hate to see the day when mine go :(

Sorry if I associate all animal life as equal...

* edited * Either way many see a dog as part of the family and treat it that way. You may not, and/have working dogs. That doesn't negate the feeling of others who do see dogs as another family member.

I had a dog, she dies when I was 17. "We" got her a year before I was born, obviously she wasn't an integral member of the family that I was around since birth...;)

We lost both our Springer Spaniels within two weeks when I was younger. The older of the two, Poppy, died when she was 15 years old. She had been ill for some time previously though and it was expected that she might pass. But then her daughter Rosie who was 10 and seemingly in impeccable health, died a couple of weeks later... She wasn't the same after Poppy died. We always said she died of heartbreak. :(

She used to be a bundle of fun. A big silly thing who played ball and laid in the middle of the floor upside down and wagging to get a fuss. In those two weeks she just wandered around the house, just looked at you when you threw a ball, and curled up in her bed/box. One morning we came downstairs and knew something was wrong when she wasn't waiting for us on the other side of the hall door like she always did. We walked through, and she was curled up in the middle of the floor, lifeless :(

Aaaaaaaand now I'm welling up...

Sorry but this is my point. The logic isn't valid it's fallacious. Nobody can tell me that losing a dog is the same as losing a child or family member. I've experienced both several times, and you simply can not equate the death of a person and the grief you feel, which can last a lifetime, with the loss of a dog.

I love dogs and have been an owner all my life. Here's a video of my previous dog, Micky, who I had for 19 years. I loved him to bits, but when he died, I was very practical about it and didn't crumble into some crying wreck on the floor. I just went out and got a new dog.

Here's my new Border Terrior, Zac:

Dogs are brilliant, I love them, but they're not people, far from it.

You are an idiot if you think losing a pet is in any way comparable to losing a child.

I personally cannot comprehend anybody putting that level of importance on a pet.

Poor little guy, RIP

I was a bit of a wreck when my hamster died, I loved that guy. Such a little character. So must be so much worse with a dog given how much more interaction you get with them.

Always sucks losing a pet no matter how big or small, as they become a part of the family

That says more about you than anything else. Not sure you are using the word "love" correctly in this sentence.

Yeah whatever dude. You know nothing about me so please spare me the psycho analytical crap. You read a couple of my posts and you think you know me ? Just lol.

What I don't understand is that in your first second you label someone who thinks differently to you as an idiot, and then admit in your second sentence that you can't comprehend it in the first place.

You can't comprehend how someone else feels about their interpretation of family, so why label them as idiots?!

I agree you cant compare a dog to a child.

Most parents a really happy and throw parties when their kids leave home, when I have to leave my dog for a few days I hate it.

It kinda is really. You can't replace a person, but you can easily replace a dog. I know because I've lost family and replaced many dogs.

I never compared it to losing a person.

If to you, losing a dog isn't much different to the telly breaking down and needing replacement then I think I can safely say you're a bit weird at the very least.

I can't comprehend the disdain for all animal life people like you must have. It's not human so it doesn't deserve to have the same right to a good life as a human. It's people like you that are the problem in this world, why we have wiped out half of the earths wildlife in the last 40 years and why we are going to leave a dust bowl for future generations. We are all animals, we all have the same right to life and right to live life.

Personally I'm not ashamed to admit I cried hard when she was put to sleep, just as much as the deaths of my grandparents.

Not all of us are as cold hearted as you and silver...

Well now you're putting words in my mouth. That's not what I've said in this thread and I've never even implied it either. If you look back at my posts then it should be obvious that I'm a dog lover who has owned, cared for, and doted on dogs all my life. Just because I don't fall to pieces when they died doesn't make me a bad person you know, or 'weird'. Actually, I find it weird when people try to claim that dogs are equal to humans.

Had to have one of our german shepherds put down a few years ago and it was one of the hardest things we've ever had to do. Its honestly like losing a human member of the family. All of us where emotionally numb for nigh on a year afterwards!

How am I putting words in your mouth?

Your post that I quoted is in direct response to the post I made using the replacing a broken TV thing as an example.

You replied that it kinda is really the same thing.
