Hey,

I've been going to the gym for 4-5 weeks now doing something along the lines of:

  • 6 min jog to the gym
  • 15 - 20 mins CV work (bike, running, elliptical)
  • 30 mins of machine weights (10 reps on each machine, full body workout)
  • 6 min jog home (sometimes I walk if I'm really tired)
Ideally I would like to lose weight, I’m around 225lbs and 6 ft tall. Will doing the above a few times a week help be lose weight? I also play tennis but this will soon end for the winter. The "instructor" (I use the term loosely) at the gym was saying that the weights routine should help me lose weight but I'm not so sure.

I've probably put on 5lbs in the last month. Some of it I'm sure is due to a couple of BBQ's and parties. Will my weight reduce as I start to get into weights more or will my weight increase?

Thanks,
Jon

you don't understand the semantics.

you do not want to lose weight.

you want to lose body fat specifically.

your muscles could increase and bodyfat could decrease, therefore overall you haven't lost weight but look a lot better.

understand?

you don't understand the semantics.

Nope, hence my post.

you do not want to lose weight.

I do want to lose weight, at 225lbs I'm too heavy and would like to lose weight to ease the pressure on my knees and joints. Plus I don't think being heavy is going to help be down the road.

you want to lose body fat specifically.

This would be good.

I don't want to have huge muscles, just a bit more strength and definition to help my tennis and to generally feel healthier.

He's right.

You can lose fat purely by doing weights (not the best way to go about it, but still an option)

The more muscle mass, the higher your metabolism, the more fat you burn doing nothing.
It's like a vicious circle, but a good one!

The gym instructor emphasized the fact that they want to keep the heart rate high when doing the weights with a track of numbered weights machines and the short reps.

Perhaps I need a bit more cardio in the mix to shift a little more weight and to compensate for the lack of tennis?

they are trying to get you doing it so that it acts like cardio.
if you are happy with this then great. if you would prefer to be a bit more productive with weights then ask them for a more free weight compound orientated routine.
of course, compounds with free weights can also get the heart rate up also, so it will benefit you in both areas, building muscle and cardio :)

its not weight your wanting to lose, your wanting to lose bodyfat specifically. let me give you a crazy example.

John weighs 100kg, 25kg of this is fat, 25kg is water, 25kg is muscle and 25kg is bone.

John decides to wear a sauna suit and loses 20kg of water, he now weighs 80kg meaning he has lost 20kg of weight but is still carrying 25kg of fat.

So John now drinks 20kg of water and goes back to 100kg.

John now decides to starve himself, his bodies survival mode kicks in, it starts eating his muscles and storing fat, his body eats 20kg of muscle, he now weighs 80kg but is still carrying 25kg of fat.

John starts eating again and his muscles recover so he is now back to starting position.

John now decides to do cardio and loses 20kg of fat, he now weighs 80kg and is now only carrying 5kg of fat.

Can you see what i mean now?

you dont want to lose weight, you want to lose bodyfat, this may in turn cause you to lose weight though. it depends on how you lose it.

The workout isn't bad at all. I may give it a couple of months more and see how I get on.

@Psycho Sonny. Ding, I gotya now. :p. Makes sense.

Thanks for your help fellas. I'll stick with what I've got for now, maybe throw in a little more cardio and see how I fair in a couple of months.

do light waits and tons of reps like one those workouts for women if u want to lose weight with weights, it will make you more toned aswell.

doing proper weights for men will just give you more muscle and a higher metabolism but you will probably want to eat more aswell... most people who do weights to gain muscle still do loads of cardio to burn fat and looks muscular

I know cardio is a great way to lose weight.

But I have always been told 90% of losing weight is your diet? If you are buring say 1000calories a week in the gym, but are eating an extra 1000 to regain energy. Well you are never going to lose weight?

Eh?

People concentrate too much on the weight aspect when looking to lose fat. Does weight matter if you are losing fat?

so much mis-information

Men can still lose weight whilst building muscle, it's not impossible, it's just much harder to do, rather than switch between the two every month. You have to make a choice really, build muscle or lose weight?

Stop being so pedantic, of course he wants to lose weight.

It's not pedantic at all, it's the truth. Your bodyweight doesn't mean that much, it's what the weight is composed of. I weigh about 130KG, I am very heavy, but if I was about 100KG due to losing body fat, I'd be quite lean as I have a fair amount of muscle mass. However, if I built up muscle mass while losing body fat, I might end up not losing that much weight in terms of what's on the scales, but I'd look and feel different due to less body fat.

As has been said, if you build up the muscle mass, your body will burn more calories at "idle", so providing you've got a decent diet, you could lose body fat that way. That's the way I intend to do it, along with a lot of compound exercises.

i agree that is not about weight, its about body fat

the same person at the same weight can look very different

a) good muscle structure, low body fat

b) lots of fat and little muscle mass

I'm well aware of that. :p

It's tautological to say he needs to lose body fat, given that nobody goes on a diet to lose muscle.
