Lost 1000 points on Timespy Graphics score after MB + CPU upgrade

Right, made a complete schoolboy error with the Heaven Benchmark test :o

Just realised my previous test runs I had saved had been at 1920x1080. The ones I was running on the new cpu and MB I ran at my monitor default of 3440x1440! So the new Heaven bench results are below which seems way more like it no? (please note this is running with my modest low undervolt curve where the 3090 is running at circa 1750mhz):

FPS:
220.4
Score:
5551
Min FPS:
44.0
Max FPS:
456.8

System

Platform:
Windows NT 6.2 (build 9200) 64bit
CPU model:
11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-11700 @ 2.50GHz (2495MHz) x8
GPU model:
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 27.21.14.5730 (4095MB) x1

Settings

Render:
Direct3D11
Mode:
1920x1080 8xAA fullscreen
Preset
Custom
Quality
Ultra
Tessellation:
Extreme

I also ran Control which is one of the few games I have on the only drive I have plugged in at the mo, and that is performing exactly as I would expect as I had some test points I did before.

So, given that Heaven Bench seems to be showing an appropriate uplift, and a game I tested is ok, what's the deal with my 3D Mark TimeSpy score???

Haha. On a serious note though, the CPU score in Time Spy basically doubled compared to my 5930k at 4.6Ghz, so that's looking very good to me.

Using CPUz and GPUz it's at PCIe4 x 16. The only drive I have plugged in at the moment is my gen3 nvme which is on slot 3 running at pcie3 speeds and not tied in to the cpu at all.
I'm stumped here.

Any other thoughts (bios settings to check? MSI bios is new to me so I'm not good with it yet) before I attempt a repair install of windows and if that fails, go nuclear and wipe it all....?
Disable virtualisation. Check the FCLK (can you show a CPU-z screenshot of the memory tab? Also do a quick memory bench).

I don't even know what that means bud sorry. Can you elaborate please?
In the BIOS there should be a virtualisation setting (for acceleration of virtual machines) which on MSI is often enabled by default. Disable it because Windows can sometimes enable performance degrading features if it's on.

I'll have a look in the bios for virtualisation.

EDIT - found it. Tried on and off. No meaningful difference.

Also, I've just thought could it be my RAM?

I'm using the same Corsair vengence quad channel kit I had on my x99. It's x4 4Gb modules cl15 3000Mhz. On my x99 it would only run at 2666 max so i had it at tight timings of 31,15,15,14. So that was quad channel on x99, at Cl 14 at 2666mhz.

On my new board it's now running at the xmp setting of 3000Mhz at the default cl15 timings but it's obvioulsy not in quad channel anymore like on my x99.

I've taken 2 sticks of ram out now so it's only 8GB and it says it's running in dual channel in cpuz. Running timespy again with all same settings I got a slightly higher GPU score of 18,369.
So that's 'only' a 719 point loss compared to my previous build.

Could quad channel ram at cl14 on my x99 5930k (even though it was only running at 2666Mhz vs 3000mhz now) setup account for the better Timespy GPU score ?

Try running it at 2666MHz CL14 and did you do any memory benchmarks? It could be the issue. Can you post a CPU-z screenshot of the memory tab? I want to see your FCLK because someone with similar problems to you in Timespy had their board setting the FCLK too low by default which caused lower scores only in Timespy.

I'll give that a go. I really don't know this motherboard yet so it's a bit tricky for me.

Here's the CPUz memory settings. As mentioned I've taken 2 sticks out for now so only running 8GB.

I've also just realised that aside from the tighter timings I had running on my x99, I also had it at 1T (rather than 2T like now). Could this be it?

Your uncore seems pretty low (although I have to check because it is a new platform), does it go up if you put the system under load?

2T makes only a marginal difference but worth trying, although I'd try 2666 cl14 first.

In the CPU tab what is your bus frequency?

The uncore reading goes up to 3700Mhz hen I run cpuz stress bench. That sound right?

Bus speed is 100Mhz.

I don't know where the gear 1 and gear 2 settings are yet. EDIT - found, gear 1 was set.

Am on release bios, and there's no new ones yet on checking.

I've manually set the ram to the same settings I had before: 2666Mhz, 31,15,15,14 and at 1T. Will run Timespy and report back!

EDIT - ok, no change. GPU score still the same around 18,300. With all this messing around I notice my CPU score has now dropped down to around 11,500 too (it was 12,117!) Think I will put all sticks of ram back in and set back to xmp.

Why is it only Timespy that seems to be an issue?

Do you have a spare HDD or SSD? If so, you could do a fresh windows install on it and then try Timespy. At least then you'll know if a reinstall would fix it, without actually messing up your main Windows setup. Then you'll know if it's a hardware or software fault.

Actually can you confirm with HWInfo, I believe the FCLK is labelled 'system agent clock'.

I can't seem to find that. Is it it the main window with all the drop downs, or in the sensors status window?

That's a great idea, but I don't have a spare really. They are all chock full of games and data I don't want to lose.

I'm thinking of doing a 'repair' windows install to see if that helps as you don't lose data, as described here https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/16397-repair-install-windows-10-place-upgrade.html

Here is a stab in the dark.... i have experienced the same sort of performance loss (also a 3090 FE)

Has the "Activate Windows" watermark appeared in the bottom RHS of the screen since you've changed a bunch of components? Somehow that little sucker of a logo when on the screen robs 1000's of points in benchmarks and cuts game framerates (it somehow creates a phantom load on the GPU). I activated windows and all is normal. I only write this as i can see you're running out of ideas.

It's should be in sensors and in the main window. If you can't see it then can you see FCLK?
