Lost Bitcoins Man is still trying

he spends the rest of his days going from expert to expert who claims they can recover it.
There is some firms that might genuinely be able to assist him and pull some data off of these drives.
If its the right drive/complete data is a diff question.
The other problem is those firms want serious cash to undertake these recoveries, I remember LTT doing a vid on one of these a few years back.

They want a lot of money to do it and I imagine that as others have said, they would simply want paying as the likelihood of them finding the drive in a workable condition is slim and the chances of them finding the right drive is tiny.

you can pull data off drives, and for some things it'll not matter if a few bits are off because the file format might be able to cope, for other things, especially encrypted files and passwords a single incorrect bit that is not error corrected properly will kill the function of the file.

Money isn't really an issue given the value of the crypto on that drive! If they don't want to take on the risk then others would happily do so.

Data recovery fee would be the same for recovering photos or bitcoin wallet they don't charge based on what the contents are.
Also I'd be careful of which company to use. In the past some UK companies iv used were useless they couldn't recover anything and wanted paying for the drive to be returned back and for them taking a look. Total scam. Only company I'd trust for recovering HDD is on track.

Isn't it technically the property of the waste service that collected it?

Yes.
You relinquish ownership as soon as it is collected from your property. Hence why only waste contractors can resell stuff from the tip and people cannot go skip diving.
It may have already done the computer fair, rewiped, done another year and dumped in another part of the country.

I hope the council our counter claiming for costs as this will be costing them actual money to deal with regardless of the outcome.

Potentially hundreds of thousands. And I expect a lot of the work will be outsourced to Counsel too.

A FOI request once this is finally over would be interesting to see how much money has been spent defending this, money better directed to other services but has to be incurred due to this idiot.

Well this hasn't gone to Court, all that happens is a bloke in the Council saying no.
They probably had a meeting round the water dispenser.
If Bitcoin Man takes them to court then a lot of charges could incur but if he lost he would have to pay them.
At the moment they are just playing Tennis.
