Lost in translation.

23 million is nothing to the nhs . I can guarantee they waste more money attending accidents or trouble caused by people who just spent all their benefits on booze

Quite probably. You could always start another thread titled "****ing it away" to discuss that particular issue... :p

That aside though, even if translation at A&E was provided free of charge to anyone regardless of their circumstances, that still wouldn't amount to what is actually spent. Much of the budget will be for multilingual informational leaflets and for translators present in GP surgeries where the whole communication difficulty due to shock, stress, etc that is encountered in A&E is nullified.
Do you think saving a tiny percentage of the NHS's budget is worth the public health problems that would come with denying first generation immigrant communities (who are almost invariably among the poorest in society) easy access to medical advice?

No-one is saying that there should not be any translators available for people that cannot speak the language and have arrived at A&E with emergency conditions. It happens in a lot of other countries, but that doesn't make it right. The argument is that it is not unreasonable for those people to have translators paid for by their travel insurance company. If they are not tourists, but residents, then it is not unreasonable for them to be able to speak English or pay for their own translator.

So to repeat the question to the PCers, what is unreasonable about expecting someone who lives in England to speak English? I don't know about you, but I certainly wouldn't expect to live in another country and carry on my life without learning the language of that country.

It's just a shame that many do, which kinda nullifies your point.

Marbella, Costa Del Sol, Marmaris, Benidorm, Faliraki, even places in France - all filled with British ex-pats who don't speak the local lingo.

It shouldn't be ignored because it is a small amount of money, it should be ignored because it is not an issue.

Its just yet more "Tax payers pay tax and that tax money is used for things that don't directly benefit them every day, the horror!" garbage from the daily mail.
This pretty much.

Without translators I'd imagine many more tests would need to be done to establish what's wrong - potential errors made by not finding out who is allergic to what - resulting in law-suits, or further medical treatment to correct the error (which overall could cost more).

Wanting people to learn English is a different issue, which has nothing to do with the matter at hand.

True, there are many English people living abroad that don't learn the local language. That doesn't make it right though does it?

As for France - what kind of comparison is that??? You have to pay upfront for medical treatment in France!

And you won't get a free translator thrown in if you go to a Spanish or Turkish doctor. Living in Marbella etc, you're best choice would be to go and visit one of the English GP surgeries there. Those areas that have been so populated by British ex-pats have many services run by British people for British people.

Did you read that after you wrote it?

If everyone in England spoke English then this matter wouldn't exist, so it very much has something to do with it....

I'll admit I've not read past the first page but can we please please get a ban on post and run daily mail threads, the op posted a link with no real comment then three replies provoking others while ignoring questions posted to him and then disapeared it's getting so dull and tedious.

Well seeing that I have been branded a racist I am not sure what comments to add,
