Normally in cases like this people are not named because by doing so you could identify the victim (e.g. The mother or other family member) or minors. It will have very little, if anything, to do with their gender.

I still can't believe it, I loved them when I was younger (still have two of their CDs) and he seemed like such a nice guy.
