There's been rumors floating around for a while now, but looks like we finally going to get them in 4k releasing on December 1st this year. Following has also been confirmed:

"It's ground up 4K reconstructions. 4K scans of the OCN and 4K scans of the VFX film outs"

Cannot wait!!

It'll be interesting how the 4k scans of the vfx will cope. Some films the effects looked fine on vhs/dvd/cinema but when put on a 40" 1080p tv off a blu-ray looked awful, Matrix Reloaded comes to mind. The blu ray versions of LOTR looked pretty good, it'll be interesting to see how they look at 4k on a 60" tv. I'm sure The Hobbit films will look fine, but they're nowhere near as old.

That's two days of my life already planned then. :)

Nice to see they are doing both cuts/versions as well.

I can't think of anything less appealing than extended versions of the Hobbit films.

It's a shame Weta can't go back and tinker with some of the CGI

I'm not talking George Lucas style - adding crap that wasn't there in the first place, but some of the CGI is really going to show it's age on UHD.

Legolas sliding down an elephant for instance.

The extended Hobbit versions are actually miles better than the original.

But do agree it never needed to be that long in the first place.

However someone called tolkieneditor did do a fan cut turning it into a single 4 hour cut.

I remember going to see the Hobbit and reading almost nothing about it, super excited.

Came out so underwhelmed and disappointed! :(
