LOTRO -

I think I might give this a try over crimbo. I'm not a massive fan of MMO's, but I'll give it a try.

Thought I’d give this a go over Christmas as well and after half a day applying the patches I’ve spent about 6 hours on it and at the moment I just get the feeling that it’s just a polished Guild Wars style of game the main difference being that you have to pay monthly to play.

I hope things improve as I was looking forward to this. Can some current players give some insight into the better points of the game?

Eric.

having played both games i can honestly say Lotro is nothing like GW's however AoC felt like GWs with a subscription.

as a fan of Tolkien the game has an instant attraction, you get to vist all the famous places which graphically surpass all other MMO'S.
you can happlily plod along questing or go sight seeing, plus you get to follow the story via the Epic quests..
you have a more mature community (not saying its perfect) but on for example RP Laurelin the chat channels arent filled with abuse idiots, and advice is given quickly when asked for ... afterall the community can make or break said games...
crafting is actually helpful as you progress up the levels and continue's to be a good source of steady income selling materials....
later in the game you get small fellowship instances that last between 30-60mins which are superb, or you can join latrge instances taking days to complete....
you can create a 'Creep' enter the ettenmoors area and fight fellow 'freeps' for keeps and various strategic points, tis broke since MoM but it can actually be more fun than PvE ....

the only MMo ive not tried is WoW, but from all the others ive subbed to Lotro is the only one that kept me coming back, i bought a lifetime about 9mths ago and havent regretted it.... best MMo since Star Wars Galaxies

OMFG this game is doing my head in. I have quests but do not have a clue where I'm going. I have an epic quest, and I've read the description over and over again but haven't got a clue which direction to go in, can anyone help me before I just give it up lol?

^^ you can use that interactive map to find NPC's or Quest locations

Turn the difficulty setting down from mmorpg to mmo.

Awesome game, great story, lots to do. Ive got a Minstrel and a 'Man Burglar' (yes, that did have me shaking my head when i saw it) on Laurelin as well as a bunch of low level characters from trying out the different classes. Some things worthy of note:

- Book 7 starts next week. Its a big patch that adds extra content (the wood elves place, cant remember what its called), makes some changes to many classes (good for everyone but hunters) and re-jigs the XP to make progression from 1-50 quicker so that you can get to Moria. Theres also going to be a *controversial* and optional beta quest finder which will tell you when youre near quest targets. Not sure how thats going to work out with the Lore and feel of the game, overall looking forward to it.

- There are many useful resources for aiding with quests. The two best are

The Google Map of LOTRO - Yes its not very in-keepping to have a sat nav for LOTRO but when you really need to find an NPC or a place, just enter it into the box and itll show you where you need to go.

LOTRO MMO Database - A great quest and items database. Quests have maps showing you where roughly the quest target is and how hard - great for those fellowship quests where you cant find a fellowship and want to know if its soloable.... generally not.

Im on Laurelin - Bardlas is my minstrel which is my main now, happy to help if you shout. Im part of Serenity, a quite friendly kin so feel free to drop me a tell if you wanna join or need a hand. If im not on the other side of the world...

Ive been playing on the trial and found no one actually talks. Bit lonely running around in the grass on your own.

Not enjoying it enough to sub to it at the moment.

I will continue for now tho

You know the trial doesn't let you send tells? Gold spammer measure. I only play it in bursts, but always found it to be one of the more sociable mmo's. Try Laurelin, it's RP server.

I'm looking to pick it up too. Can anyone say what's the highest pop server? Euro, of course.

Laurelin for the best community and very well populated, its a RP-EN server but you dont need to Role Play, also the PvP is fantastic on there unlike Snowbourn which is generally full of ***** ;p

I left a lot of good mates on Snowy and transfered all my chars to Laurelin and havent looked back, grouping is fun and even though its a Role Play server (which i dont do) its brilliant to watch the events and listen to the general chatter..

I just bought the gold edition for 10 quid.

I had the original since release but i figured why not just buy this fancy steelbook one with a free mount for a 10er instead of resubbing :)

Ill be on this tonight!

I play Lotro atm too with Loki, got my first char to 60 yesterday :) most of the book quests require you to group, some of them you can solo as you get higher, others you can't, however you can always skip them - you don't have to do them. The only 1 you have to do is the first one of Volume 2 which gets you into Moria.

With the release of book 7, most of the population is in Lothlorien or Moria, I guess they will soon be trying the new starter areas once they get bored of grinding rep. I have been seriously bored once, and that was when i first got into Moria, i found it really hard to find my way anywhere and it was doing my head in. However with book 7 there is now a quest tracker, but you have to turn it on - it will show you a general area of where to look for the goal - really useful.

An issue I have found to date is that there are loads of high level chars that tend to be doing the end game (and have done the old end game - Angmar and the Balrog) so there isn't much call for people to do it again - but there's plenty of other stuff to do.

edit: just to say to that I have skipped the vast majority of group stuff (that's not to say i didn't group) - i just chose not to do it. I still have a full quest log, even at 60, of solo stuff and grey early quests that i didn't manage to do when levelling. there is plenty to do!

This has been updating for about 2hrs and its got a helluva lot more left to download. Its made virgin throttle my internet connection. And its currently saying...
