LOTROL or WOW?

While I agree that the old SWG was far and away the best and those projects really excite me I suggest you edit out the actual names or hinting towards them. I have been warned a fair few times about it by a Don.

Quote from LORT Website:

"What can you tell me about Monster Play? Monster Play is LOTRO's answer to PvP. In Monster Play you are able to play as an evil race or monster and battle against other human players. It's entirely consensual and limited to certain zones so there's no need to worry about being "griefed"! "

I love all genres of games but an MMO without real PvP seems totally pointless, Raids are fun for a while but half the fun in most games comes from killing other players.

Eastern MMO games always seem much more PvP oriented, as do FPS games, what a supprise they are more popular!!!

Carebear roleplayers are what give MMOs a bad rep. :p

I do not mean to insult LOTR, it looks like a very good game but without PvP I personally can't consider playing it or honestly recommend it.

Agreed, I am so bored with the MMORPG market today, the only game with the kind of PvP I like is shabowbane, but it is kind off old & buggy. Plus to tell the truth, besides th PvP there was nothing to do & I found myself bored. I have been trying to find a free MMORPG with SB like PvP, no luck though. Ballistic Weapons in UT2004 is fun, but the servers are almost none existant.

I make my own fun quite often, there is lots to do that doesn't involve being able to build bloody player cities, which to some people isn't that great to begin with, what you can do is jump into whatever you fancy doing (for the most part) quickly and easily. If I fancy doing some quests I do some quests, if I fancy an instance I do an instance, I have set raiding dates, which I can pick from, I can do PVP as much or as little as I like.

Then there are the player events, we have a pretty wierd selection of people where I play and we've had christmas stories acted out by three orcs and a tauren, level one races through zones, sing songs, and people just sitting around talking. it just depends how much imagination you put into it really

What I feel you are saying is that because SWG had one type of play and let people run riot ... (and how well did that work out?) World of warcraft is somehow wrong... (and Curiously still exists)

oh and you mentioned being ganked repeatedly ... Bounty hunters versus Jedi?

SOE ruined SWG I thought, they got rid of a lot of options.

Whose comments are you referring to here Zefan?

Anyone talking about projects concerning the emulation/reproduction of SWG. Apparently SOE have had words with forums in the past about linking to this sort of stuff so, with good reason, the Mods don't particularly like it.

:edit: actually I did jump the gun. Silly me. I didn't read a post entirely and thought it was talking about something that it wasn't. Well I've warned you now anyway in case you were thinking of discussing it :p :o :o

I think you'll find that generally, when SWG is referred to on these forums, that we mean Pre-CU and Pre-NGE, not the current abomination that shares the same name. Raph Kosters creation is the NGE, but before that SWG could have shown a thing or two to WoW and most other MMO's out there today.

I think you'll find that he was the main driving force behind SWG from the start.

The problem was that in many ways SWG was an experiment for Koster's ideas, and the result was a niche market MMOG that was never going to satisfy LucasArts/SOE in terms of subscriber numbers. My guess is that they were expecting 1 million subscribers at least - twice the number of paying subscribers than the most popular MMOG at release, Everquest - the most they ever got was 300k.

So then they had to resort to desperate measures, the CU and NGE, but there's a problem as the mainstream MMOG public are an unforgiving bunch, and won't go back to something they didn't immediately like, so all they achieved was annoying their existing subscribers.

Thanks for the warning but I already knew that. You and I both had discussions about it all a while back now. In fact, I believe you're still on my MSN list from those discussions :)

He was looking after the entire project but took a back seat in the early days as far as I was aware. He left it to people like Thunderheart and Tiggs to do most of the driving until he decided it was time to do something drastic about the game and invent the CU and NGE. That's when the game fell to pieces.

I guess we could argue about this for a long time :) He's credited as creative director on the original SWG though, and the game that I played does seem to fit in with his opinion that games are edutainment.

If your trying both for the first time I would go for LOTRO.

If your playing a mmo for pvp then you wont be playing wow anyway ;)

But if you plan on going heavy end-game and throwing your life at the game I would go for wow.

Well WoW was good for me though it kind of fizzes out after a while. Played solidly and hardcore for 9months and loved the challenge. Now couldnt care less about it, tried for a re-run but just couldnt enjoy it as i used to.

waiting for the Pirates of the Burning Sea, praying that will be good :D

I'd say WOW 100%.

I've played LOTROL a bit now and I find it annoying. For instance the Environment is nice graphically etc and the story is OK but the character animations and general feel is absolutely appauling. I tried all classes and all races trying to find a combination that didn't annoy the hell out of me. One that made me laugh the most was a Human Female Burglar.. started off OK'ish then you got stealth, honest she walked around like a 100 year old granny on sticks. Kneeling down to pick something up looks like it's made up of 3 frames. Seriously why spend all the time making everything look OK and neglect the very thing of most importance to the player ie their Character.

The general UI is not as good as WOW (however similar) and the cooldowns on attacks/spells and subsequent attacks left a kind of random feel to it (difficult to explain). If it was a school report it would say "could do better : C".

I've given up on LOTRO after only a day, just seemed so slow and tedious, the graphics although nice chugged quite a lot.

It's not a patch on WoW, hopefully Warhammer will be a lot better.

WoW got ruined thanks to The Burning Crusade.

WoW is ALL about grinding for potions and stuff now it's utterly crap and boring.

Pre-TBC > All, the days of Blackwing Lair, Molten Core, and C'thun wiping :D
