Louder than expected. What should I expect?

Hi all,

I've got my new machine (specs below), and it performs wonderfully, but is quite a bit louder than I expected. I don't know if my expectations were wrong. Even at idle, it's loud. I'd welcome any thoughts please.

It'll probably be the AIO. Mine was annoying at default settings, but it's effective enough to be on minimum fan/pump speed. Have a look in the bios if it's connected to the pump header or the software. No experience with Kolink though
 
I'm not sure which component is louder. The machine has come with Armoury Crate installed and that seems to be controlling the fans. (It's been a long time since I've played around with PC hardware).

In Fan XPert in Armoury Crate, the AIO Pump 'curve' is set to 100% flat - all four points max out.
 
The 7800 XT should be silent at idle because the fans turn off.

No idea about the PSU or the AIO, but I'd expect a modern PC to turn down all the fans to a minimum when idle/desktop and just be a light hum.

Have you done that in the bios? Could you share your curves or profiles?
 
I'd try to find the worst offenders by unplugging fans from the case or stopping the fans with something like a pen if that's not possible.

My money would be on the AIO, either it's pump or fans.
Could be the PSU.
 
Modern pc should be quiet at idle, I have mine so it's barely audible, at times I've had it set so the case/cpu fans don't even spin up until the cpu hits 40c (not all pwm fans support being totally off)
Only the gpu should be screaming when gaming.


Do your self a favour, don't have a PC on a desk, it might look good on social media but in reality it's just dumb
have it under the desk with the left side facing away from you.

and try to figure out how to adjust your case fans, they should need to be barely spinnning when your not gaming, and you will need to adjust them so when your watching youtube videos they don't start spinning up overly loud whilst your cpu is still fairly cool.

PSU should be almost inaudible imo, some of them have a button on the back to switch between active/passive.


your cpu doesn't care if it's idling at 26c or 40-50c, but your ears do

looks like a case that's designed to radiate noise tbh, so much mesh

The PC should be almost silent, with the exception of a mild hum from the water pump. And pretty much, none of the fans should be turning, especially when it first powers up.

I took a look at the Kolink manual and it was unclear to me how you configure the AIO. I couldn't find any documention on that at all. But my guess is that's the offender.

My case has PWM fans and they where loud to start with.
I am used to 3 pin case fans running at 5v (~ 700rpm).
With the PWM fans i think i had to set a percentage to lower the speed (~ 800rpm) and not have them ramping up.
I set the speed in bios.
I don't mind GPU and CPU cooler speeding up when needed but not the case fans as well.

It could still be the AIO though so play about with the fan curve.

shouldn't they all be set to PWM mode and then you set fan curves in the bios

I set mine all based on the CPU temp, low spinning under 40c, my CPU only ever gets to around 55-60c under gaming anyway so I set my fans to around 50-60% @ 50c
I've got powerful noisy noctua fans though so even 60% on them pushes a lot of air

Takes a bit of testing to get the fan levels right, but really simple.

Really your case fans aren't making much difference to the CPU anyway, would be better to have case fans scale up with GPU temp, but I don't think it was an option on my board, unless there was a temperature sensor header that I could have bought a temp monitor for and stuck it on the gpu's backplate or something.

Really you just need to clear the hot air the GPU is dumping into the case.

I just don't want my case fans ramping up as well, thats why i set a static rpm.

My AIO fan curve is very similar to yours though.

Bios settings can make most fans silent at idle, but some lower quality fans won't let you set them at low enough RPMs to make them silent in bios.

However, Argus system monitor allows to lower fan speeds than bios allows in windows instead. I have 2 loud 140 corsairs that came with the case. Too noisy for me at lowest bios setting, but Argus makes them silent after windows is loaded by allowing you to set lower rpms than bios does.

I get as low as 26c at idle with an almost completely silent system even though I have 8 fans including the Cpu cooler fans. Though those kolink fans might just not be any good slowed down if they're required to be fast to cool your AIO.
 
Best checking in bios to see what speeds the fans are running at, but if not, then the unplugging/stopping fans approach works too
