Louis theroux's LA stories: City of dogs

Yeah couldn't believe that white german shepherd, literally as soon as he opened the car door it was behaving. Crazy, just from being assertive.

That poor dog that walked home to the house of it's owner and the guy was asking the home owner if it was his dog, blatantly it was, used for puppy making and then thrown out.

Licensing - is it the best solution? It could make a black market for dogs more worst than what it is already.

Look on Gumtree and you can find pups n kittens for sale all the time. So sad.

I watched it the other night. It's very sad and it doesn't matter how many kennels you build the problem isn't going to solve the problem until you target the scum that are breeding the dogs, chucking them out on the street and not caring for them.

It was very sad in parts, the attitude some of the people had about the dogs was pretty shocking.

There were some great characters in it though.

Show was fascinating to me. So much of America we see is the America they want us to see but when you get to see behind the curtains you see how it is far from the idealistic place people believe it to be. Some of it was so run down and just horrible horrible looking place. My mind boggles at the American life style its all so false and the differences between the rich and poor is so drastically different to here I would say. A lot of their lives just look so false.

Also I second that 'dog whisperer' dude and the white German Sheppard. I could not believe it! I sat there mouth wide open. She had put up with that for 5 years was it? In less than a minute that dog was like a completely different dog all together.

It isn't to surprising about the dogs being put down, you can't keep them forever and you can't just keep building kennels for them. You heard how many she gets in during a single day, the amount of kennels and room needed to keep housing every day that ever came in would be insane. She could get something like 20+ in a day, not sure how many went out, but given a dog can live many years that would just spiral out of control. Felt bad for that woman who worked there, that job must be tough and no wonder they all suffered mentally as she said with depression etc..

How to treat dogs is definitely something you have to learn. To be the alpha male in the household and to let them know their place. Sounds cruel but it's how their brains are wired.
Having said that, my lurcher thinks she's a lap dog most of the time and can easily take up 2 thirds of the sofa. However she will instantly get down or out of the way if told.

Can I put you to sleep? There is no suffering.

(By sleep I mean kill you).

If I were alone, hungry, homeless and ill with no prospect of any of that getting better then sure. A slap up meal followed by a snooze from which I never woke up doesn't sound too bad.

However, none of those apply to me so I'd rather stay alive ta !

But my initial response remains - there is no suffering for the dogs that are put to sleep - don't anthropomorphise them.

I found this film gritty and at times heart-wrenching. The camera work was excellent and the realism of it was really unique. I loved every minute. It also sparked a lifelong interest in brazilian cinema for me.

Am I the only one who thought the 2 hippies were incompetent dog owners? As proven by the 'Dog whisperer' guy? They looked like they didnt know how to interact/be with an animal, I swear it was just a fashion accessory to them. Then they got rid of the dog after being shown there is nothing wrong with it and got a small stupid dog instead. I was like 'WTF, you morons know nothing about dogs!'.

I know this account will be removed pretty soon based on its only three posts, but can we keep it just a little bit longer? Can we?! Pweeease?! :D

Welcome to America, lower tax and less given to charity means no money to look after stray dogs. A worse education system and less evenly spread wealth means worse owners which results in this situation.

Less given to chairty? I would like to see your evidence for that because everything I have every seen sows quite the opposite!
EDIT:

A quick google shows you to be completely wrong a expected!
In 2011 the USA was rated #1 for charity donations, donations of time and helping strangers!

They do actually give less money, though. Their World Giving score is high due to their helping strangers score being somewhat ahead of everyone else.

Just want to add that Louis Theroux is awesome. Find every episode genuinely interesting and really enjoyed his 3 part LA Stories series.

He's so blasé in his questioning which I think is why it's good viewing as he gets some interesting answers from the people in his documentaries.
