Low FPS - new GPU and/or processor or...?

Hey all,

I built a PC back in 2012 using parts from OCUK (high level spec below).

I haven't used it for gaming for a number of years, but have just started playing a game called Pipe by BMX Streets and I'm getting FPS dips under 30 at times - not on high settings either. Looking at people playing this game on YouTube I can see others getting 100fps+, presumably on newer systems.

Not sure if this is enough info to advise, but if I wanted to increase my FPS significantly, could this be achieved with a GPU upgrade? Or am I looking at a full CPU, GPU etc. upgrade?
  • Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz
  • Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD 7850 OC Windforce 2X 2048MB
  • Corsair Vengeance Low Profile 8GB
Thanks,
Harry

Overclock the cpu and a new GPU such as a GTX1060 would be a very nice upgrade. What res do you game at and is it a Gsync/Freesync/standard screen? How much do you want to spend?

Thanks for the responses.

Want to spend as little as I can get away with, I guess 200 ish ideally.

Thanks for the suggestions both, will look into overclocking and the linked gpu. Using a standard 1080p screen

I don't think you need to worry about overclocking the CPU for that game, just get a new GPU. A 7850 2GB is old now, something like a GTX1050Ti 4GB if you want to spend less, or a GTX1060 3GB if you're willing to spend that much, are good upgrades.

Could probably pick up a 2nd hand card either for half the cost with similar performance to the GTX1050Ti (like a 280X or GTX770 or whatever).

I'd be looking at a GPU upgrade, CPU should be okay. Maybe think about upgrading your RAM in future.

With regards to the GPU, a previous gen (970/980 etc) or current gen like a 1060 - 1070 would suffice and give you some decent future proofing for games that have a similar requirements level. May be worthing waiting a bit on GPU though, the new nVidia range coming out should see prices drop :)
