Lowered car vs emergency vehicle question

I don't expect other people to risk their car for me, nor break the law. If there is nowhere for traffic to go in front of me I often turn off my sirens as leaving them on can make people panic and do stupid things.
This needs to be taught on people's driving lessons. The number of people who do the most insanely stupid and dangerous things when they eventually see me is staggering. I've have someone stop just before the crest of a hill, on a bend and on double white lines. Then they obviously wondered why I'm wasn't overtaking them and sat there looking blankly at me in their mirror.

I've also had a van driver see me and pull into my way to block me. I have never understood why on earth someone would do this...

In my own car I do not mount kerbs and don't go through red lights when an emergency vehicle approaches. I don't expect others to do so either.

Had a mate actually pull an emergency stop because an ambulance was coming towards him on the correct side of a major a road, ccar behind went straight up his back end. Thankfully for the driver who hit my mate the cam footage from the ambulanceshowed that my mate was completely in the wrong and was given points and a fine for dangerous driving.

Personally if I can get out of the way I will try even if its only movie g over a couple of inches, its an extra couple of inches they wouldn't have had, on the other hand though if there is no way of me getting safely out of the way I will "make progress" so as not to unnecessarily hold them up, but I will also stay within the safe limits of the road with regards to speed. Was told by a police officer that this is the correct thing to do as you can still be charged with an offence even if moving out of the way, whether it be mounting the kerb, speeding or causing an accident t through dangerous driving.

As I understand the correct thing to do is to not mount the kerb, and no emergency driver would ever expect you to do so, even if it would help them out. Happy to be proved otherwise though.

That's the theory but in practise and in reality they expect you to move out of their way no matter what. I always move out of the way but I've seen several situations where I've been to next to somebody who either didn't move out of the way or didn't even realise that they were there and the gestures being made by the emergency services were plain and clear to all.

Don't think that Trumpton will wait behind you patiently if they're on a "persons reported" call or you're in for a surprise.

LFS considers rescuing people from fires more important than the bodywork on your car.

I always find the ambulance drivers to be the best. Cops I've seen and know urge people through lights. Northants police love their bullhorn. I've only ever mounted a curb under instruction from my driving instructor because some plank didn't move but you'd never catch me do it in my own car as I'm not sure it's fully capable :p

Nope, utterly wrong. If there is room for people top get out of our way then that's great, if there isn't then we wait. That's not to say some drivers don't get the red mist on their way to a job and expect the parting of the waves in all circumstances, but they are the exception not the rule.
Don't tar us all with that brush thanks.

Surely this doesn't just apply to cars that are lowered, I imagine there's a fair few factory (sports/super) cars that won't mount a kerb without damage.

Was just reading this thinking to myself if I was put in that scenario what would I do. Frankly the Noble wouldn't go up the kerb, bumper would hit it first (well splitter then bumper) and stop the car going up it I'd imagine.

Edit: And my tyres are seemingly afraid of my arches, given how far apart they are ;) clears speedbumps fine, but have you seen the size of some of the kerbs these days! My door sometimes doesn't clear them.

Kerb mounting, no unless it's tiny.

Hate morons who hear / see a siren about 500yards behind them and then stop as soon as possible causing a block in the road for the people and emergency vehicle behind. Just continue driving until they come near you.

My MX5 was on the deck and I never had problems mounting a kerb. Full lock left, let the tyre touch gently then climb up the curb. Simples.

I think you may be mistaken there.

Not only from what has been said here, but if that were the case you'd have emergency vehicles bashing cars out of their path. That clearly isn't the case.

Also, it wasn't my car as I said in the OP.

Had an ambulance behind me so tried to move over and ended up getting stuck. Had to get a friend to come out with some blocks of wood to get out. Granted it was stupid to do as I didn't know how deep it was going to be but I won't be doing it again.

You got stuck in a Puddle?

Doesn't look more than 2" deep!

(I can imagine there might have been a bit of as "step" on the edge of the tarmac but even so...!)

I knew there was a reason why I like SUV's! :p

Out of interest, would peoples opinions on the situation change if a loved one couldn't be reached in time because some ones cha tastefully modified mobile couldn't get out of the way?

If someones time has come to die you can't really do much..

Everything happens for a reason and all of that .
