....right up until they see what the Olds has stuffed in the front end. I've gotten a bit too used to medium-to-large displacement pushrod V8s to be bowled away by a straight-six diesel, even one with a pair of turbos bolted up to it. I will concede that they do make sense though - reasonable power output, large amounts of torque, and reasonable fuel economy when loafing along. BMW quoted the average FC a while back in development as around 37mpg, did they stick to that?

How much torque does the Olds produce?

more torque then the M5

You say that like it matters.

By the time that torque has gone through the long-legged slush box the car actually has less absolute torque at the wheels.

Diesel still sucks. I don't care if it has a million torques, a diesel will never be able to rev. Screaming to the redline is one of the characteristics of a performance petrol that a diesel will never be able to replicate.

I really don't get why this is a problem - you get all the power you need without having to rev the nuts off the thing.

It sounds amazing. Seriously. I never used to appreciate that when I had a diesel. Now I do... it's hard to explain, but there is just something awesome about nice sounding petrol engines.

horses for courses. Yes the diesel BMs sound better than other diesels, isnt about to give anyone the horn tho is it??

And as for torque, its great - its the stuff that wins races, but hardly an enjoyable way to send a car on (imo)

I'm with Drexel on this one ;)

That's completely missing the point. It's the sound, the feel. It's just a more visceral experience.

I don't understand why BMW are bothering to make such a powerful diesel, if you want economy get a diesel, if you want power get a petrol.

It's rather simple, some people want power *and* economy

Not as much as these new BMWs thats for sure, but it's the way it does it :) I prefer the delivery on a big V8, as most of them that are built properly will still pull at revs where a diesel has packed up and gone home. And leaving that engine (the Olds Y series was not the best the Americans ever produced) aside, the most numerous of the pushrod V8s - the small-block Chevy - can be built up to make that kind of torque without spending too much money.

Lets see - £500 for my car, another 2 grand to build up an SBC with high-comp pistons and a fuel injection setup, or I could spend a fortune on a modern diesel car. If torque was all I was after, then I wouldn't be spending my money on a BMW. When I want handling thats so good the car almost becomes dull I'll buy German ;)

***edit***

Just looked at my big pile o' notes for the Olds. The guy who owned it in the states did a bit of tinkering, power is 170hp and torque is 245ft-lbs (about 330Nm I think, can't be bothered to work it out properly). In '72, the SBC in one of it's guises was producing 470Nm of torque from the factory, and that wasn't exactly at it's limits.

So you deliberately buy rubbish cars becuase cars that are good are boring?

Wow, I take it when you get a train somewhere you pick the most unreliable service becuase lets face it, getting there on time is boring and predicable, a breakdown is more fun ;)

but if a diesels still gonna woop yo ass how longs that feeling gonna last? :p

LOL, do you honestly think it's 'gonna woop my ass' :D

Bring it on ;)

My point is that no matter what performance it has, a diesel will never really feel like a true performance car.

It's not even about the economy any more. If you want economy, you can buy a 320d. Economy just happens to be an added bonus of these engines. What is special is the driving characteristics of them - just masses of low down power, and an incredibly smooth rev range. Unless you've driven a 6-cylinder BMW diesel, you won't get it.

me too I love revs! having said that my R6 satisfies that when the little white light is blinking at me at 16000 RPM, so I wouldent rule out a diesel car..... I'd still end up with a petrol though I reckon. Unless for some reason I aquired a really long commute.

It seems pointless considering the extra initial purchase price when buying a diesel equivalent car, not to mention the fact that diesel is more expensive at the pump.

As an example Mr X who is spending £35,000 on a car is not going to bothered about saving £500 a year on fuel.

you do realise however that your bike stops developing any power after 13krpm though dont you? ;)

if the 4.5d got put into a 3 series and had a remap it would pwn your car :p *runs*

How likely is that though? Not very....

That's a pointless comment, If I bolted a garret GT42r on to my car it would 'pwn' said 4.5d 3-Series ;)
