So I got a 4770k way back in 2014 from OcUK and thought I'd grab myself a delid tool and some thermal grizzly to get a bit more of life out of it.

Tool all printed off by a buddy of mine, first time doing this and boom! turns out my CPU had already had this done to it - Not sure if I should be happy or not :D

Aha! I can assure you that was not the case. Maybe I've got a phantom CPU delider in my house?

If it definitely was not dedelided by yourself the most likely scenario is that the CPU was bought by another customer, they were not happy with the OC they tried, delided to try further but still not happy. Stuck the IHS back on and returned to OcUK within the 14 day period who then placed the CPU back into stock.

Is that legal? Selling returns as new?

I guess that's a possibility, still... feels a little naff :(. The job didn't even look particularly great :D

Dunno about the legality (I really should know given my job LOL) but I know from working for a variety of different electronics retailers that goes on - if it is returned as "unopened" and appears in original condition chances are most places put it back into main/good stock.

Never buy OEM, you’ll almost certainly get one pre binned, or worse.

Factory sealed retail or refund for me

OEM is fine if you are just building systems for stock but if you want a reasonable chance of a good clocking chip a lot of places definitely bin their OEM stock (and/or you'll get customer returns because of being bad clockers) even some that claim otherwise (yes they definitely do).

Somebody told me a while ago, who knew somebody in the know, that most of the returns get used on prebuilt pcs. Crap if so as the buyer is paying full for used parts.

OCUK’s chips that fail pre-overclocking certification by them do go back in the prebuilt systems and they are quite open and honest about it. No way an OEM chip return should be sold as new though. Then again given the additional warranty etc. and usually minimal price difference OEM is usually not the sensible choice.

Surely that is illegal? Selling used parts as if they were new? I wouldnt be too happy at spending a fortune on a pc with a gimped chip that wont overclock as high. Each to their own.

Everyody seems to be selling on returns as new. Ive lost count at how many products ive ordered from Amazon/PCWorld, Argos that are obviously returns. I send them all back as will not pay full price for something that has been used.

It comes with the terrority I guess since such a huge percentage of shopping is done online these days. People just get stuff, try it and then send it back under the regulations. So long as it's not obviously been used they will take it back, and let's be honest they are going to punt it for the most they can get for it.

My other half infuriates me with the amount of crap she buys, clothes wise, online. She'll fancy something like a tshirt but if you spend 150 quid or something daft you get free delivery and returns. So she will just add random stuff she doesnt want, just to try on the tshirt, then send it all back. TIME AND TIME AGAIN!!!! OK it's not such a big deal with clothes, and she would never wear it out and then send it back, but the shipping, packaging, etc is crazy. I would imagine its a fairly common tale.
