Just about to install the first M.2 drive I've used.

My motherboard is a value type so doesn't include a heatsink/heatspreader.

Are they needed for long term use or should it be OK for me to leave the M.2 drive "naked"?

Thanks for advice.

Annoyingly a lot of drives have a sticker, which is not some kind of thermal transfer material, where you want the heat sink to go :s

How much it is needed depends a bit on the drive - some will thermal throttle under sustained heavy loads - personally I'd rather have a heatsink on one than not.

Most of these SSDs usually have a metallic sticker that actually helps spread the heat out. Removing it is ill-advised for a couple reasons including the fact it may/will void your warranty if you have trouble with the drive.
Don't take stickers off of M.2 SSDs. One, it voids the warranty. Two, it voids the warranty. Three, it voids the warranty. Four, if you screw up, you can damage the SSD. Five, it voids the warranty.
