I have been gandering all over the internet at good M.2s, but there are so many mixed reviews it's unreal.

I get most will never hit their peak read and write speeds, it's just advertising, much like getting 1tb... but only having 960gb. Thing is, I'm not buying atm I'm just trying to understand what is actually good for what. I'm aware there's 3 or 4 versions of NAND with varying life and speed capacity which also affects cost. though off the top of my head I forget with is all around the best.

Basically, I have a gaming laptop with a spare M.2 slot. I'm looking at a performance drive 1-2tb that has a long life but good speeds. I keep looking at the 970 evo plus as that's meant to be amazing.

What do people here recommend and why?
Please and thanks.

Unless your moving large files from one fast m2 to another fast m2 theres no real performance diffrence.

Does your laptop support pcie4 m2 ?

Value for money with western digital sn 550 is a popular choice .

@mickyflinn I think it's only PCIE3 for the onboard M2, the 4 is built-in around the graphics I think.

The bit that throws me off is I was some reviews saying some are terrible for gaming and cause a lot of stuttering, I mean I don't mind getting what I pay for so to speak. I am kinda averse to getting a drive... that then makes things lag or dies quickly. How are the 550 for longevity? Also, thank you for replying.

Your welcome.

5 year warranty should asure most people but not heard of many failures compared to other brands. Just dont believe overpaying and trying to find the balance between price and performance.

Stuttering there can be a few causes i think you would be unlukely to pick a drive that soley causes that issie.

That's not bad at all really, and general gaming shouldn't see it do it's rewrite limits either.
Do you have to use manufacturer software? like I've used Samsung's magician and that's pretty sweet, but I have heard bad things about WD's, forced advertising and can me a bit lumpy?

Only amazing thing is amount of brand overpricing Samsung charges for it.
It's literally more expensive than PCIe v4 drives!
If it were MLC there would be at least some basis for price, but EVO has been for years TLC.

For a PCIE3 laptop drive you might want to look at the SK hynix Gold P31 (Anandtech review). Compared to the Samsung 970 Evo Plus it's cheaper, has slightly better performance, and has significantly less power consumption (and heat).
