Howdy,

When the new Mac Pro 8-core Penryn Intenl models come out shortly (http://www.macrumors.com/2007/10/18/penryn-based-mac-pros-soon/) I'll be getting one of those to sit along side my MacBook Pro, as I have been waiting a while for these new ones, but have a question that some of you might know the answer to?

Obviously it will come with Leopard, and this will have Boot Camp on it, well I will install Vista x64 on there, but will Vista x64 recognise the 8 core CPU do you know? I don't know of any 8 core PC's these days (I could be wrong, out of the loop with PC's now), so wondering if Vista would recognise I have 8 cores in the Pro?

Cos I would, more than like, chuck my 8800GTX in one of the PCI-E slots for Windows to use (yes Im aware OS X wont use it.. sadly), and that, combined with 8 cores, and 8GB RAM... should make a tasty setup for gaming... right?

Anyone?

ta

Not really. Why do you need 8 cores seriously?

Yeah, think that's a bit over kill, 8 cores would be great for graphic designers etc, using 3D rendering, but I doubt any game is going to need 8GB RAM and 8 cores.

Can you put a GTX in a Mac-Pro and use it purely for gaming on Windows?
You can, so long as you have a secondary card that works with OS X.

OS X won't see the 8800GTX, but it WILL work under Windows.

So long as you can boot in to OS X on a 7300GT then I see no problem running the GTX in Windows (make sure you have the drivers!) :)

Cheers, EVH. :)

I didn't even know that was possible. I just thought the Mac Pro wouldn't recognise the GTX full stop (from a thread I read on here a while back).

Was thinking of builing a new PC...but this could sway my mind. Obviously won't be getting 8 cores though. :D

Yeah thats exactly what I plan to do. I know the GTX works in Bootcamp, cos people have done it!

You can never have "too" fast machine, if you got the money to spend on a highend machine then do it, thats what I plan to do.

If Im gona buy a mac pro, im not gonna bother with the lowend one, I might aswell spalsh out, and thats what I intend to do! I'll never use it to its full potential, but I want everything to run as smooth as silk!

I havent a clue, I dont even know if they will add Penryn chips to the 4 core models, but Im sure they will beef them up to 2GB as standard at least.

Its all speculation at the moment, but i'm looking forward to seeing what they do... just keep your eyes on macrumors.com!

It's like £2500+ for the Octo Core Mac Pro.

That's a hell of a lot of money for a "gaming" rig when you'd use 2 cores at a push :o

It'd be the sweetest dual booting machine around, but I can't justify that cash.

Its one of those things where I'd buy it and then half an hour later think "Oh my God what have I done(!)" but if you can afford it then why not.

The thing that annoys me with computers is that no matter how awesome it is at the time, two years down the line its ancient news and worth bugger all.

remember the mac pro uses FBDIMMS which are more expensive than regular ddr2... probably still a ripoff to buy the ram from apple though. no reason why it wouldnt work in vista, with bootcamp its just the same as using any other intel 5000X dual socket setup. not sure if home premium supports dual sockets- might be vista business/ultimate only.
