Mac Pro : 8-Core : Boot Camp?

Do you have software that could push more than 2 cores?

I'm just trying to save you a lot of cash when the 2.66GHz Mac Pro is ample for almost any user (barr the render houses and heavy audio editing users).

If, on the other hand you're buying it for a long term investment (10+ years) then go for it.

I have no software the will push it at all, but it will be quite a long term investment.

I might even, when going to buy, opt for the top end 4 core machine instead, I suppose it all depends on what the new range consists of. Hopefulyl they will Penryn the 4 cores too!

We had a client in our studio the other day who somehow managed to max out our new quad core 8gb of ram all singing all dancing Mac Pro with a logic session :) I think it was just excessive use of space/delay designer plugs though more than anything clever.

That's why it helps to have a seperate DSP and to use ProTools ;)

I've had a few times where I've got a beachball on the companies Mac Pro, but that's because it's loading a multi-track (36 channels + fx, if I recall)..

My point was, it's rare for ALL 8 cores to be 100% loaded, unless under a specific strain.. the average user, would likely never utilitse all 8 cores :)

Eitherway I'm getting me one of the new penryn Mac Pro's... I'm checking the site everyday in Nov for their release :)

I'll do a few "unboxing" pics when I get it too, I always love seeing peoples unboxing pics of their new macs, be it a Mac mini or a Mac Pro!

Same! :)

keogh, just to add my two cents.

I've been thinking about going down this route myself, as mentioned earlier in the thread.

I don't think the decision to get a Mac Pro is as mad as it may seem - from my own point of view, it is a bit more than I would like to spend but not to lengths where it is a stupid purchase. For people with a bit of good money backed up (or earning good money) it can be as much a sensible purchase.

8 cores for home use, is just plain unnecessary. Unless you've got a small sound-proofed room in your 'home music studio' or are mad into your video editing - I just see little point at all.

It's cool to be able to say you've got 8 cores and feel that your machine can take anything you'll throw at it - however, as mentioned before in the thread by a few wise-heads - you're just plain unlikely to use those extra cores.

And the money saved from going Octo-Core to Quad Core or whatever the downgrade will be when Penryn comes in - will come in handy when beefing up the rest of the components. (You'd be mad to do it at Apple's prices).

I'd just like to finally damn you for making me think that selling my MacBookPro and Xbox 360 could help fund one for around Christmas time.

I would never sell my 360 and MacBook pro to fund the Mac Pro, but I have the cash to buy a 8 core mac pro, so thats the reason why.

You are right, the 8 core might be excessive, and I think the thought of having 8 cores in my Mac is whats doing it for me.

But I haven't decided yet tbh, I mean I am deffo 100% getting a Mac Pro when the new lot come out, thats for sure, but I'll decide on the 8 or 4 core model when the penryn's come out... for all we know, Apple might not even put penryn's in the lower range 4 core Pros! I'm sure they will do sumin, cos the 4 core Pro's haven't been updated for a year now I think, so they need updated... aswell as improvements in the gfx card and RAM!

When I have decided and received my Mac Pro I'll get pics up and you will see what Pro I opted for. The Penryns are to be released Nov 16th I think, so give Apple a little while longer, and we should have them released late Nov... really looking forward to getting it!

Can't disagree there, but you will never buy a decent rig if you thought like that though.

There is a fine line though, when doing PC builds I always go for high-end consumer targetted products. In my experience these offer the best bang for buck, even moreso if you overclock. I'd much rather spend £800 every two years than £1600 every four. :)

The playing field is different again with Macs though because they have a better resale value. Its all good. :D

Not even thinking bout resale value, got no thoughts on selling it, just want it first :)

I'm actually using Vista for my everyday stuff at the moment as its quicker than my MacBook Pro, but its making me sick, cos ever since switching to OS X a few months back, I really realise how crap Vista is compared to OS X!

So hurry up  and release the new Mac Pro revisions, I'm itching for a fast, beautiful OS X machine!

I say No....

Stick with the MBP it's dirty fast, just stick another 2GB DDRII in there and maybe up the hdd to 7200rpm if you really need extra performance....

You know it's true :)
