Mac users' elitism

Has anyone got any market share figures for different sectors. That 5% figure is often quoted, it's 5% of global annual computer sales?

I'd like to see Mac market share of laptops, market share of personal/home users, students etc...

I suspect the Mac share is much larger than 5% in those markets, and growing rapidly. The 5% figure looks low due to the massive volume of computers sold into the corporate environment... which while clearly important is isn't really relevant to a discussion on "Mac users' elitism" or on what the general public actually thing.

The 5% is actually a high figure. This comes about from sales to home users in the US and is not very representative.

or how about - I'm prepared to pay more because I prefer the machine and the way it works? Why is that being ripped off? It's called personal choice.

Exactly, some people don't like macs, fair enough.

But what I don't like is the people dismissing it and slagging it off without even having any real mac experience or taking into account more than just hardware.

If you take into account the actual form of the thing, of any mac really, especially the iMac, then you're getting a lot for your money.

If you look at the over all package and experience, you get more with a mac, if you don't care about any of that then fair enough, a normal PC will be just as good.

But don't **** them off without any experience just for the sake of it.

IIRC, ******* built a PC very similar in design to a Mini - cost about £600, and had a tendancy to overheat. Don't suppose they sold many.

*Cough* FAQ *Cough*

You can build a shuttle similar in spec to the £539 Mini I found for £400, but it has twice as much ram.

(Mini was a 1.83ghz C2D, 512mb ram, 80g HD. Shuttle was a 4600+, 2x512mb ddr2 800 and an 80gb HD)

funny thing is Mr_White is that it's always PC users who bring this subject up.... it appears to be them that has the superiority complex because they have to put Macs down - funny that innit ;)

It was a thread about Mac users slagging off PCs :p

They have obviously never seen Lian Li or Silverstone cases :)

Why do so many people think that Macs cost more than PCs.
Dunno - My 2.0GHz C2D MacBook with 2GB, 80GB, DVD-RW etc was £840inc. That's no more expensive than a Windows based laptop of similar spec.

Hardly a like for like comparison, you look at an all in one PC similar to the iMac and it's not going to look so expensive then.

Ok, I admit there is a lack of a comparable all-in-one solution in the PC market. A PC of the same specification as a poverty spec Mac Pro (which still costs almost 2 grand!!) is almost £800 cheaper!

I used Windows all my life then I bought an iBook G4 for Uni and loved it. Now I have an iMac and I will never go back to Windows unless Microsoft pull something out the bag and Apple do something disastrous.

I still have a Windows PC but the Mac beats it in almost every way. I still use Windows every day at university and to test web pages on but I can't wait to get back onto my Mac.

Stuff like expose, dashboard, iDisk, built in DVD player, never got any spyware, malware, viruses, it's easy to network. Never had to format or restart or uninstall/reinstall a program. Plus all the great programs and beautiful GUI. Now that I can boot into Windows if I need to it's great. There's a reason it's the industry standard in creative, design, music industries.

Plus I downloaded this program the other day and now when I move my mouse pointer to the edge of the screen on my iMac it teleports across to my iBook so I can use the mouse and keyboard with it. Then I can teleport back when neccessary. I can drag files across as well. Amazing, and free.

And it's no more expensive than a Windows PC really. Show me a system with 1GB ram, 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 160GB hard-drive, operating system, webcam, keyboard, mouse, monitor, iPod all in a beautiful package for £1,200.

I still enjoy using Windows PC's. There's nothing THAT bad about them but I do think Mac's are better overall and I will continue to use them until that changes.

Yeah, but he went looking for it on a Mac forum no?? And then posted it to be backed up by other PC users :)

It's not like a Mac fanboy started the thread here saying 'yeeeaahhh PC's are crap!' It just seems like PC users are overly bothered by the Macs for some reason. So some Mac fans don't like them. Big deal!

:)

Sure if you shop around you could find expensive PC's too. doesn't really prove anything.
Most PCs are significantly cheaper. With Macs you buy from Apple only, or not at all. That's what happens when one company has a monopoly on the machines.

True, but then how many threads do we get slagging off macs on this, an overclocking forum? (which you can't do with Macs, no free performance :( ;))

In my opinion I think they are a rip off. A pc can do all the tasks of a mac and costs less

I just coped it from the website. Didn't really stop to think about it. It's the same price on the UK site too :)
? The cheapest Mac laptop is £749, which is around $1500 US. For that you get a 13" screen, 512MB of RAM and not even a DVD writer.

No they can't. Can they protect against viruses without expensive software? Didn't think so ;)
Using free anti-virus software, yes... but most people who know what they're doing never get viruses anyway in Windows.
