Mac users' elitism

- 13" widescreen glossy LCD screen (1280x800). Looks amazing, dead/lazy pixels are extremely rare, widescreen is fantastic for watching video content, playing the odd game and for a general productivity boost. 13" is also the perfect portable size, imo; I wouldn't be caught dead lugging a 17" laptop around and squinting at the ridiculously high resolution, myself

Hmm, 13" is small whatever spin you put on it :) Most people don't need something that portable - but it would be nice if there was a choice. Even the most budget of PC laptops have 15" 4:3 screens these days, or 15.4" widescreen.

Looking on a certain well known online store, they have laptops for £499 with 15.4" 1280x800 screens. Or £848 for a 17" 1440x900 screen. Those are with specs equal to or greater than the Mac you paid £799 for.

Can you find a Windows laptop that does all that for £799 and isn't going to fall apart after two hours? I couldn't, so I bought the MacBook.
I guess you didn't look very hard :)

Did you miss everything other than the screen size? lol

Don't forget DVD player Al, unless you know a bit about computers (VLC) you would have to buy that seperately.

You can pick up a 13" MacBook with 1GB RAM and a DVD writer for £799.01 with free shipping.

I bought a laptop of almost identical specification except it is 15" instead of 13" for £499 and I don't have to install another OS to play games on it.

That's the beauty of it for me though, I wouldn't of bought it if it was bigger, that's why I dismissed the MacBook pros, I wanted something light, compact, extremely portable, with good battery life, to put it simply, it gives me everything I want from a computer, and that to me, is well worth the money, like I said, I'm not biased to them in anyway since I was a hardcore PC enthusiast, I just prefer them a hell of a lot more for what I do now.

Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, a whole suite of applications?

Didn't think so.

That's a pretty unconvincing list Al Vallario :/

Including software in the list is meaningless. Apple has to include software because there's only a small ecosystem. Windows has a massive ecosystem so software doesn't really come into it when people buy a system.

I don't bother convincing anyone, if people are interested in a mac and want one, they'll get it and love it.

There's no point trying to sell them to anyone else if they don't want one, that's verging on fanboyism, as is slagging them off for no reason however.

I thought I had covered it by saying that the alternative PC had equal or better specs in those other areas :) Suffice to say, Macs are eye-wateringly expensive.

Just noticed this... no, for £799.01 you get the combo drive, according to the Apple website. ie. a CD-writer and DVD player, not a DVD writer.

Even poverty spec PC laptops have a DVD writer ;/

Good point. DVD Player.app is a great application. Does what it says on the tin, and does it well. I've had no end of trouble playing DVDs on Windows XP (Customary reinstall after purchase to get rid of the bloatware, whoops, where did my 30 day trial for that DVD player software go?, etc.)

I also forgot to mention the Higher Education discounts. You can slash 15% off that price (to get £679.16) if you're enrolled in an academic institute. Apple have also offered rebates on iPods and printers for students, as well as extended support packages.

Good for you. I bought my MacBook because I didn't want a 15" screen (the extra cost to the manufacturer is really quite insignificant, anyway, and throwing in a larger screen actually makes it easier to throw in extra hardware). Is your 15" laptop a widescren, though? Does it have a glossy screen (comes down to personal preference, but I love mine)? A built-in 640x480 webcam with a great application for taking pictures with it? Built-in WiFi and Bluetooth, with full WPA2 compatability out of the box? A DVD writer? Gigabit ethernet? Optical audio input/output? Firewire? No worries about malware/viruses? A beautiful Operating System? Loads of incredible applications out of the box? A pleasurable setup process? No need to defrag your hard drive every month? Is it less than 1" thick, and does it look gorgeous?

All the applications?
Bluetooth?
WiFi?
DVD player?

Nope.

My iMac 20" is cheaper than any equivalent PC for what you get with education discount. I know I worked it out. And we aren't talking budget monitor, keyboard/mouse, etc.

Eh? Yes you get Centrino laptops for hundreds less than Mac laptops, and most if not all PCs are bundled with OEM software like PowerDVD or whatever.

You can get a 1GB, C2D laptop for under £500? With widescreen, webcam, DVD-writer, lots of software... not even close. The MacBook is not at all expensive.
