Just having an argument with someone thats worked in an Apple Store for a month and now thinks Macs are the greatest thing on the planet.....

He's just bought an iMac and is going to buy a MacBook Air next month, and all he does is MSN, Facebook and play Left 4 Dead and CSS.

Just to get my facts right before I rip him apart, am I right in beleive that apart from the OS and case, the hardware for a Mac could be bought on Overclockers right now?

Cheers,
Dan

Pretty much.

All macs are is over price hardware with their own operating system, it can be installed on most hardware these days, a quick google search will tell you the compatible systems.

Besides, i find it really counter intuitive whenever i use OSX. You have to jump through so many hoops to do anything.

No real advantages to it over Linux.

Although its illegal

To install other than on Apple Hardware. Also you gain the benefit of customer service that is unbeatable.

Buy the hardware on OcUK - Nope. Mac's don't use a BIOS.

Using OS X on a non-Apple branded computer is in breach of the EULA.

There may be workarounds in place to bodge around this, but the simple fact is that using non-Apple hardware leaves you with a gimped Hackintosh.

With Macs you pay for the name and the styling.
Hardware wise its stupidly over-priced (in the region of at least £500 pounds for some).
And as Superewza says, I've not found any advantage to OSX over Windows - aside from using less ram

I have never been impressed with their service anytime I have had to use them and I have had much better service elsewhere. I would hardly say their service is unbeatable, I think some people like to exagerate how good apple is to justify their overpriced purchase.

The customer service is amazing and nobody competes on that front. The simple integrated solution with free help when you buy is invaluable to many people, particularly if you have no interest in understanding how a computer is put together etc (which is the majority of commuter users).

Those are major advantages over a self-build.

Really?

How many other companies can you wander in off the street and have someone deal with your technical issue right there and then (worldwide) without hassle?

Rot.

My MBP (bought in the states) had an issue. Took it to the local Apple store without a proof of purchase. The Genius bar took a quick look, booked it in straight away and had it back to me with a new logic board within 3 days.

You wouldn't get that sort of service from any other retailer. I know, I used to work for one of them.

This one always makes me giggle, that people actually believe this.

I had a customer who did this recently, he brought everything into them, laptop, router, cables etc, they told him he needed a new logic board but he could get away with a usb - lan converter and sold him one for a rediculus price which still did not work, he then brought the same stuff into my shop, 10 minutes later I told him he had a faulty network cable and I also reconfigured his router after apple reset it and never bothered to set it up again.

Yes, brilliant service. *clap*.

Oh yes, this is much better than Dells next day onsite warranty

To be honest, macs are pretty good. I wouldn't dream of buying one myself - but it is the kind of machine I might get my Mum.

Most are rather well designed (I meant that 27in iMac is pretty spectacular looking) relatively easy to use and the support is second-to-none. However, you generally can't do as much with a mac as you can a Windows PC. Aside from the software, macs can't be overclocked properly, DIY upgrades are often very tricky and the prices are high.

There is some software that is Mac-only, so for people using stuff like Final Cut Pro then the mac is the best option. On the other hand, if you want to play games then a windows PC is still where it is at (steam may now have a mac section, but the game selection is a bit sparse). However, for many major applications there is both a Windows and Mac version, for these the user experience is usually the same, its just that the mac system will cost more for the same spec.

Yeah exactly my point im making andi :)

Theyre good, but unless you want to for a piece of Mac only software (Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro) a PC will always be the better option :)

I myself am thinking of buying a Mac sometime in the future due to what I want to do at Uni, Audio recording and production :)

Exactly

Care to point me to my nearest Dell retail outlet without purple shirts?

Unless you pay through the nose for an upgrade the Dell warranty isn't worldwide.

I was in NYC not long ago, had a problem with year old UK purchased iPod, which was replaced in under 30 minutes. Very happy.

How does this work? Do they specify a exact time of day to turn up?

Moving on:
To be honest if a mac doesn't make sense for you then it's obviously not your cup of tea.

However saying it is "overpriced" is ********. Just because *YOU* think it is doesn't mean others think it is.

Don't know what you were attempting to do but thats how I feel about Windows.

[And yes, before anyone says, I use both on a daily basis]
