MAC Vs. PC

all i know is, my music video making mac owner friends (have all been to college, and make a living from it) are total noobs and come to me to convert a dvd from R2 to R1, or from dvd to avi/mpg

overpriced, over bell&whistled imo :/

Just because some users are noobs should not be taken as an indictment of the platform. It's not like there are not excellent video conversion programs available for OS X. Handbrake is an excellent example.

Dual socket 771 rigs are extremely expensive to self-build. I did a thread on it a while back. In both cases you have to use slow, expensive fully buffered RAM.
Probably won't recommend it for gaming as I'm not sure if it can SLI/xfire.

It definitely can't, though it does have 4 16x (physical) expansion slots, so a multitude of monitors is not a problem if that floats your boat.

it was more the point that people have this idea that mac = video editing, pc = games

most mac users are lemmings tbh (not having a dig at all at you here mate)

But I'm adding an extra 1gb memory and logic express (about £130 i think) It looks sooooo pricey compared to a PC lol, but i really need logic!
 
I used to be a mac fanboy, and spent over 2k on an ibook when I was a student..

Thinking back, that could have bought me two or three PC's that were more powerful, lol!

Nowadays, they use the same hardware, and you can get some really nice (and even mimic) pc cases/peripherals - so the only thing going for the apple machine imo is the OS.

Are you prepared to pay a half grand markup just for the operating system?
 
bledd, I agree with the lemmings comment, mac fanboyism is sometimes embarrassing (as indeed is Windows fanboyism) but you have to realise that even people who use both systems and who aren't "noobs" to quote yourself (I built my PC from scratch like most people here) actually prefer using OS X to Windows for various reasons.

I would advise the original poster to go along to an Apple store and try out OS X first hand to get a feel for the OS before making their mind up.
 
ok so more than likely you will be getting new mac which wil come installed with leopard osx which was voted "the best and most user friendly operating system to this day" quoted from ed mendleson(chef editor) pc magazine!!!!!!
now ive been thinking on buying a mac myself prob macpro as i borrowed mates mac and enjoyed playing around.
the mail is easy to use, internet reliable, and no drivers needed really helps if things go wrong.
dont get me wrong i love my pc and if i was buying desktop id stick to pc but for mobile use now im seriously thinking to buy mac.
i think which ever you buy her she will either love or hate.
its like marmaite !!!

Mac's are great, but personally, I'd go for the linux/slackware route on a normal PC. Maybe later when I lose interest in OS systems and just want to surf and use software, I'll spend money on a mac.

That said, I'm currently using XP - helps when there are multiple users in the household.
