I'm in the market for a new laptop since my 4 1/2 year old 17" (1440x900) dell is getting a bit past it and now has a faulty power socket too. I did try a newer dell a few weeks ago but due to a fault (which i've since discovered is extremely common) and general disappointment with the build quality, I returned it for a refund and am now interested in apples machines.

I own both an ipod and iphone 3g but my only real experience with the mac was old LC2s and LC3s running os7 when I was at school in the early-mid 90s. Although I didn't like them back then, using that experience to decide would kind of be like judging windows vista by experience of windows 3.1.

I'd be using a new machine for general web browsing etc and also editing and processing photos taken on my Canon DSLR.

I was originally looking to spend about £1k ish but could happily spend a bit more for the right machine.

Which would be the best out of the 2 for me?

i switched to a unibody mbp about 3 months ago, and picked up osx in about 2 days. It's so simple and intuitive to use.

make the switch, you won't regret it.

I got a macbook pro with no intention of swapping to Mac OS on any kind of permanent basis, I just wanted to use Aperture for my photo editing. 3 years later and I don't use anything but a mac, really easy to pick up in my experience.

My generic advice is a macbook pro if it's your main machine, the macbook screen seems too small to work on all the time to me. I don't think for general photo editing the spec difference will matter much..

well i got myself a mac mini only two weeks ago to try as i have never been on a mac OS before and like you i have been a Microsoft man since windows 3.1 :D

so far i am loving the mac OS and i am now thinking of moving to a 24" i mac and selling my PC, i just love the idea of having a PC all in one screen

so go for it is what i say, sure it dose take some time to get use to but its all part of the fun, there is only a couple of things i have found that won't run on mac but i can use bootcamp if i wanted to and have the best of both worlds.

Just as others have said really the screen on the 15" is significantly better quality than the one on the 13" from what I've looked at when they have been side by side in store.

I spent what seemed like a very long time making the same choice here. After lots of reading and multiple store visits I chose the 15" Macbook Pro over the Macbook and the Macbook Air.

And I'm very pleased with it.

I don't think it's a simple as everyone is making out here.

The MBP pro is undoubtedly a nicer machine and it's not really that much more expensive. However, if portability is a concern for you then the MB is worth considering.

I had the exact same choice to make and went for the MB in the end. It's a laptop so it's only ever going to be a secondary machine so the extra portability was worth the worse screen and less powerful graphics.

It's not necessarily going to be a second machine, I haven't owned a desktop for years. I'm happy working with a macbook pro as my main machine but I wouldn't want any smaller a screen.

Some excellent useful info here!I've been in a similar dilemma. Sorry to hijack the thread a little but do you guys reckon a quad core MBP is around the corner? :o

Around the corner - no. In the pipeline - has to be.

Apple seem a bit reluctant to go quad core in some ways though. You have to think they could put a quad core in the imac right now without any technical issues if they wanted to but they aren't. You'd think they'd be keen to get a wedge of sales from the first quad core imac but maybe it'd tread on the mac pro a bit too much.

I'd say end of the year is about right - I would say january but since apple pulled out of macworld that doesn't work. Or they announce at WWDC in a couple of months with a shipping date of september. God knows.

Either way we'll see Snow Leopard before quad core imacs or macbook pros I think it's fair to say...

Well I just spent about an hour at the apple store and to be honest I'm not really convinced. I can't really justify to myself spending £1300 on a machine just to not be reduced to a tiny screen. The mac os isn't really a deciding factor either. There's nothing wrong with it but I'm happy with windows too. Don't know what to do now.
