just to add on my point from earlier, id agree with those saying go and try a few displays out before buying. personally im long sighted (if that matters), we've got a few of the new MBP's and apple displays in at work and i seriously struggle to use them. i may as well use it to do my hair.
Only really applicable if you've got the screen brightness turned up to Gas Mark 6.
Calibrate* the two screens, sit them side-by-side and you'll find, like I did, that the glossy screen is a mirror - there's nowhere you can use it without being plagued by reflections. And yes, you can fiddle with the screen and sit at a slightly different angle so you can avoid the reflections, but I'd rather not have to worry about where and how I'm sitting so I can use my laptop effectively.
By contrast the matte screen works brilliantly, everywhere - even if you haven't gone down the calibration route. It's also by far the better choice for anyone using the MBP for any form of graphic, video or photographic work. Given the choice I can't see why anyone would choose the glossy over the matte, especially now it's filtered down to the 15" MBP, but people do and they seem to be extremely happy with their choice.
I suppose when all is said and done the only person who can make the decision between glossy and matte is Steven himself, but I'll still happily recommend the matte display over the glossy to anyone, having spent enough time trying to make the same decision myself.
*The panels calibrate almost identically, but once the luminance and contrast have been adjusted the matte really begins to shine and the glossy falls by the wayside.
Personal choice I think. I went for matte as after looking at the glossy ones that friends own I was not impressed with reflections. Even a couple of my designer friends at work saw my matte one and wished they'd gone for that over glossy (they were early adaptors though so matte wasn't an option then).
As has been said, go check them out in store and play with the brightness to see how reflective things get when it's at a realistic level (but to max brightness and get ready to wear sunglasses lol).
I went to the Apple store yesterday and had a look at the both next to each other and i definitly prefer the matte screen over the glossy (even though the sales person suggested the glossy :/ ) I found the glossy was just like a mirroe and i could see every1s finger prints all over it, i no its in a shop and gets touched a lot but it looked bad. Will be hoping the update it in jan/feb and will let you no how i get on with it.
Totally agree - I was in Birmingham yesterday and had a chance to go into an Apple store for the same reason and the difference is amazing between to the two. I know its exacerbated due to the multitude of lights but unless I looked dead on only inches away I was getting unwanted reflections. I really dont understand how people work with the glossy screen day-to-day as its pretty terrible...
