Hey guys,

Using my friends Macbook pro at the moment, it's the one before the unibody model.

The battery has never worked, so I've always been running off mains.

Anyway, I just finished watching topgear, closed the lid and unplugged it from the mains, took it upstairs and now it wont boot.

It powers on, and the dvd drive spins, but that's it. I get a power light on the front, which get's brighter when the lid is closed.

Any ideas? :(

edit: Argh, wrong section..

I don't (yet) own a Macbook so can't directly help. But I do have this happen to an old Asus laptop occasionally. To fix it I have to unplug the main, remove the battery, and wait for a minute or two. It then powers on fine. That's worth a try anyway.

Try leaving it plugged in for 20mins or so, then proceed to start up.
or;
Try leaving it for a couple of hours without being plugged in, then start up.

Not had this before, but that would be my first move.

Maybe try resetting the PMU? For the white macbooks, this used to be a case of holding down the power button with the battery out, but you'd have to check the apple knowledgebase for the run-through for your MBP.

How come you never got the battery fixed? Have you ever tried a different battery?

It's my mates macbook so I'm not sure why be didn't get a new battery.. I've left it unplugged for quite a while so I'll check it in a bit.

Thanks for the replies so far :)

Nope, nothing has worked so far. I followed the guide on the apple website about troubleshooting a Macbook that won't boot, but it didn't work.

Argh

Probably not because a Windows PC doesn't have the remote firewire transfer mode thingie.

Ok thanks :)

Bit of a back story;

My friend bought this mac originally, and damaged it himself. He spilt water on it and killed the battery. He claimed on his insurance and got a new MBP. Fast forward one year, and he lends me the old MBP. It's died on me and I've told him, and he's not happy. He's now saying he's gonna get a price check on it.

To me this sounds like he's gonna get a price for it, and then ask me to pay for it as I "broke" it :o

I'm surprised the insurance company didn't take it away.
Most insurance companies will just want some sort of engineer to confirm it is beyond economical repair or give them a quote that amounts to that and will just replace/pay out.

Ok thanks :)

Good friend :), Explain to him what a greedy **** he is being, and a bad friend, possibly in the same sentence!!

Doesn't sound like much of a friend!

I would have thought water damage would be a 'there and then' type thing though, not really a delayed fault. Rusting contacts maybe? Who knows. Given the history, I wouldn't put too much effort into fixing it. For all you know, he could have given it to you knowing it was on the brink of failure - from your description it doesn't sound like he's too unwilling to hang you out to dry (no pun intended!). If your 'friend' makes a fuss, I'd just tell him where he can shove his macbook ;)

Do the following precisely....

1. Turn off the computer, unplug the power, and remove the battery if it has one.
2. Hold the power button for 20-30 seconds.
3. Replace the battery if it exists and plug in the mains power.
4. Push and hold the power button continually until you hear a loud and continuous beep sound.
5. Immediately release your finger from the power button being sure that has the white light on the front flashes that you do not unplug the computer.
6. The computer should at this point boot up.

Alternatively after this also try.

1. Turn off the computer
2. Turn on the computer and then immediately hold down the Command + Alt + P + R keys together.
3. Continue holding this key combo until the computer screen goes black and the machine chimes.
4. Allow this process to happen once more (The computer should chime 2 times with a blank screen between).
5. Release the button and wait for the computer to boot.

Alternatively, if the computer does not chime at any stage or, if the apple logo does not show and the computer has had previous water damage I would suggest that the water damage has caused damage to the computer and that over the last year rusting will have also begun, and that it is not your fault that the computer is not working, a machine with no water damage would not have done this and it is symptomatic of the fact that he broke the computer with water, which has later meant that the computers built in feature called MagSafe designed to allow the power cable to fault out rather than smash the computer has inadvertently lead to its own demise.

If he expects you to pay for it then he is a fool, taking the computer to any repair centre they will automatically see the water damage caused to the computer and begin quoting for the replacement of major components such as the logic board, hard drive, optical drive, and various power supply parts and cables. Which have been damaged by water not by your accident. Its not your responsibility to pay for the damage caused by his accident and there would be no way to amount a proportion of the damage to you.

Ok thanks :)

He's a bit cheeky then. If it was written off he's not got a leg to stand on as it could well be related to the water damage.

The price for it? £0.00
Why?, because it has already been written off and should have been disposed of a long time ago.
Do not let him try and shaft you.

Best 'o' luck in either reviving the mac or convincing your money grabbing ahole of a friend that he should try running into a brick wall a few times a day to improve his IQ rather than trying to shaft the people close to him.

Just tell him that the insurance company would love to know that he is trying to fleece someone for a laptop they paid to replace. Im sure they would love to hear about that.
