Macbook questions from a n00b

Gloss is a bloody nightmare to keep clean, you don't notice it so much when the screen is on, but it doesn't half get dirty.

I'd go for gloss though.

lol. Brilliant, thanks :p

This is going to be the worst decision, ever.

;)

Matte I guess, not sure if gloss is more susceptible to picking up finger prints?
I stab anyone that touches my screen in the face with the corner of my keyboard. If a finger gets within 6 inches of the screen I scream like a little girl, someone once tried to use the pointy end of a mechanical pencil! That didn't go down too well I can tell you.

Remember kids, DO NOT TOUCH THE SCREEN!

:p

My plan for the weekend:

Compare my girlfriends glossy Sony Vaio screen with my girlfriend's sister's matte laptop screen. Only way that's going to settle it for me.

I remember slapping my brother around the head as his finger got WAY too close to my screen. Almost wacked my lecturer for pointing an error in my word document.

Gloss is great for novelty, but soon you do get fed up with not being able to properly use your laptop in 'anti-gloss' situations. Play it safe go for matte.

Dunno, that's not what it says on the Apple website, but it's all down to personal preference

I interpreted what you said as get gloss if you will be graphic designing etc, which would be a huge mistake design wise because essentially the colours are 'false' as they are altered visually by the glossy screen.

But what Apple says [1] is fair enough - gloss does make everything look nicer - I personally couldn't get over the glare and swapped my MacBook for a MacBook Pro.

[1]
Choose the glossy widescreen display to make your graphics, photos, and videos appear with richer color and deeper blacks — great for watching DVD movies. If you prefer a display with anti-glare coating for a matte rather than glossy viewing experience, choose the standard widescreen display.

If you were able to choose the 7200RPM HDD in the 15" model then there'd be no reason to get the 17" ;)

I chose the 17" purely because of the size, better DVDrw and HDD.. depends what you want it for, and if it's THAT much of a deal breaker.

I'll be honest, my likely final decision would be 17", 7200RPM HDD, matte screen. Perfect.

Just trying to sell my current laptop in the For Sale section, if anyone is interested in a very well looked after Alienware laptop at a good price head over there or drop me an email (in trust) :)

Have you checked out the benchmarks of the 7200 vs 5400?

I'm sure I read it was little > no improvement.. that's what tempted me to go with the extra storage anyway :)

Just a thought.. try TomsHardware

Ooh! Look, i found a statement that backs up what i said - hooray!

The somewhat higher energy consumption of faster spinning drives is usually compensated for by finishing read/write tasks much quicker. In the end, the battery run time of notebooks using high-speed hard drives is not considerably less than that of models with slower drives.

By the way, does anyone know what hard drives Apple use in the MBP? Im looking at the 100GB 7,200RPM model and was wondering if anyone knew the manufacturer/model, etc?

Either probably a Seagate Momentus or Hitachi Travelstar

Does anyone that has recently bought a MBP have any of the following problems?

  • Flaking/very easily scratched paint under the control button
  • Overheating issues...what are your average temps idle/load?
  • Buzzing screen if brightness set to anything other than minimum or maximum
  • Any other issues i've missed?

Just interested to see if all these original issues ive been looking into have been fixed now...before i buy my 17" MBP.

Thanks :)

I bought my MBP 2.16 15" 3 weeks ago and am absolutely loving it.
It took a whole 10 mins to 'get used' to OSX.

Does not get as hot as my older HP/Compaq Evo laptop
  • Buzzing screen if brightness set to anything other than minimum or maximum
No buzzing at all
  • Any other issues i've missed?

Do it, you will not regret it.. I am seriously thinking of getting a Mac pro for daily used and the family PC, and just keeping one other PC for the odd windows only applications

IIRC They are 1st gen MBP problems.

1 - I've not noticed any paint issues at all.
2 - No more than any laptop - I actually like the temps of the MBP it always seems to be ice cold when you want it to to be and nice and warm when you dont want it to be cold.
3 - Definatley not noticed this.

Righto, thanks guys.

I was looking at that list earlier, it's one of the reasons i asked the questions above :p

Unfortunately only one of the new MBP 17" 2.33 with 100GB 7,200RPM HDD on there so just wanted to see if anyone else had problems...

Have also been on AppleDefects.com and thats worrying me too...

Edit - i forgot battery expanding!
