Macbook refresh rumours....?

Have Macbooks always had a subwoofer? First time i've noticed it in the specs...

oh and is the thunderbolt port identical to mini-displayport? i.e. would a minidisplay port --> hdmi adaptor still work? Or would it need to be a thunderbolt to hdmi?

Tech-wise, the Air looks decidedly old school now!

That's a slight price drop on the base 13" too I think? 1080p video should be fine but looking forward to seeing people's results just in case.

In Engadget's hands on they state they had no problems with their existing adaptors.

Thoughts on the cheapest 13 inch mbp? I really want to buy one, been waiting for this update for a while. Is there a PC equivalent that has bit more on the graphics side for similar money?

hmmm im not sure its worth selling my 15" i5 mbp bought in august for one of the new ones, quad core and the graphics seems to be the only advantage, not too bothered about thunderbolt

Thanks for the clear-up bigredshark. That's definitely sparked my interest again. I've clipped 3x 10 minute excerpts from my collection (at 20Mbps, 15Mbps and 10Mbps 1080p respectively) and will be downloading them to a 13" in the store tomorrow morning. :)

What do you call equivalent? The Samsung unit I brought up earlier in the thread has an aluminium chassis, large multi-gesture trackpad, 15.6" LED backlit HD widescreen, full size Mac style chiclet keyboard (with numerical keypad), and a GT320 1GB - with a Core i5 2.54GHz and 6GB DDR3.

Sounds like what you're after, and it's only £599 (though that's a special offer AFAIK). The same laptop also comes in 14" if you'd prefer something smaller, or 17" if you want something bigger.

ugly samsung removed

that is one ugly mofo, its not even comparable to a macbook pro

Think I'll but the 13' MacBook Pro in the next few weeks, a higher res would be nice but I can't afford an Air with the disk space I need and an ethernet port is still handy. ;)

It's about as comparable as PC laptops get, and tbh I don't think it's bad looking at all. Especially given the internals, performance and price. But then I'm a Skoda over Mercedes, diesel over petrol kinda guy. :p

It answers the guy's question, after that it's up to him to decide. :)

From reviews thought the SB integrated graphics are roughly on par with the 320m? With the better cpu it would likely perform better judging from Anandtech's lappy reviews. If the old 13" Macbook Pro could play 1080p wouldn't have thought any differently with this one...

Also with battery life thought they are using more 'accurate' battery tests now so the drop from 10 > 7 hours is probably just that...

Same port, but now you can daisy chain devices AND the display from the same port. I think it's the best thing about the update tbh.

This refresh has left me wondering...

My late '07 MacBook Black is on death's door, cracked and noisy and due an upgrade in the coming few weeks!

Can't decide between:
-13" Air with 4GB RAM, 2.03Ghz C2D (£1540)
-13" MBP (Top end default spec) £1299
-15" Entry level, stock

Problem is as a photographer and frequent traveller I want the 13", but the refresh 13 seems a step backwards WRT graphics, and the MBA specc'd up is very close on performance and a lot more portable, although my 13" MB has never at all been a problem in that regard. The MBA's screen does appeal a lot, I was hoping for at least the screen upgrade in this refresh :(.

The 15" seems a lot better spec but could be a bit too big for long haul flights and general travelling, the power appeals, but I think it's going to have to be a 13" due to the size.

Decision, decisions...

If only the 13" had dedicated graphics and 1440x900 it would have been a no-brainer :(.

Same here (check the sig). I wouldn't touch it tho, makes my eyes bleed!

Yeah. Looks like I'm keeping my uMB 2.4 C2D. Bought it as a stop gap on the way to a new 13". No point having an i5 with Intel HD graphics.
