Macbook refresh rumours....?

Has it? Well I did say I was an Apple n00b. Sorry, I only noticed it had changed when I went to the store today. My bad. :o

That gen Mac Mini had the internals from the 13" MacBook Pro at the time. And as the 13" MacBook Pro has now been updated to SandyBridge it's reasonable to assume that the Mac Mini will be getting the new 13" MacBook Pro specs soon...

I'm really tempted to replace my old MacBook with the 13" pro, it's a shame the 13" isn't a little cheaper, but it's still better value than the Air IMO...

Thanks for the info Westy, that's actually useful to me as I was actually considering adding a Mini to the family as a machine for the living room (kids surfing, HTPC type stuff etc).

There are a couple of initial hands-on reviews of the new MBPs appearing on YouTube now, and they seem positive. The 13" seems to be doing very well in benchmarks and playing light games etc.

When the Mac Mini gets the 2011 13" MBP specs it should be great! Just have a look at the Geekbench scores...

The new low-end 13" MacBook Pro (2.3GHz Dual i5) scores near last year's top-end 15"/17" MacBook Pro (2.8GHz Dual i7), and the new 13" MacBook Pro with the 2.7GHz Dual i7 is just schweet!

My early thoughts on my new unit are here if anyone is interested.
That's great! :)
Though with me being a poor student you've got more cash than me :'(

Low end 13" its going to have to be now I think, despite the disappointment it'll be an upgrade from my MB Black! Now I have to find myself a student.

Just ordered a SATA 6 based 256Gb SSD - will be interesting to see what boost it gives over the OCZ Vertex 2E SATA 3 based one

I have a 2009 MBP 13 which I connect to a 30" Dell screen using Apples mini display port to dual link DVI adapter (which cost around £70!). So I have the following questions about the new MBP's:

1) Can they drive an external screen resolution of 2560x1200 like the older nvidia based MBP's?
2) Will the DP -> DL DVI adapter still work on the new machines or will I need a new adapter (I'm assuming a new adapter is needed)?

If they can't drive the screen then I won't be considering an upgrade.

I think they will do this, I am doing the same thing although I am going minidisplayport to normal displayport cable, displaying 2560 x 1600 on a 30" monitor.

It worked fine with my old 2010 MBP i5, so I can't see why it wont work with the new ones.

From Apple's MBP Tech Specs page... ;)

  • Intel HD Graphics 3000 with 384MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory5
  • Dual display and video mirroring: Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 2560x1600 pixels on an external display, both at millions of colours
So it actually supports a slightly higher external res with the new Intel integrated gfx. :)

EDIT: Not sure about q2. But I'm sure I read that as well as functioning as a normal mdp, the Thunderbolt port also supports daisy-chaining. So effectively it should work identically to the mdp in your current MBP?

EDIT2: (LOL)... "Yes" is the answer to q2. Again from Apple's MBP Tech Specs page (for the 13" model):

Dual-link DVI output using Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter supports 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Display (optional)

That's what you were asking, right?

The thunderbolt port is exactly the same as the old mini display port, except it can daisy chain and supports up to 10GBps transfer.

In other words.. It'll work with your current adapter :p

Does anyone know if there will be a performance difference between the two 13" MBP's? ( I know the processors are different but is that a massive performance decrease? )

The top spec 13" is faster than last years top spec 17"
