Hi.. I have my friends machine it powers up but just nothing comes on the monitor the monitor just stays on stand-by. And i have tried another monitor. Its plugged into the GPU. He said this problem occured out of the blue. Everythings plugged into all the appropiate places. Any suggestions??

ok, I know I gave you a bit of stick in GD but heres a decent reply.

First off you need to start ruling things out;

Make sure that the machine is actually starting up.

Do you hear a post beep??

Then...

Try checking all cables.
Try different cables that you know work from another machine.
Try a different monitor if the machine still doesn't display an image.

Those are the easiest things to check first. If it still doesn't work;

Try a different graphics card. Again if you can, use a card that know works from a different machine.

If that doesn't help try using the onbaord graphics. I remember you saying that the mobo had this feature.

Failing all of the above I'd reset the BIOS and use the onbaord graphics. If it still doesn't work I reckon you're looking at a busted machine.

Hope it helps.

Ive tried on the onboard vga but still nothing. I cant reset the bios because it just doesnt come up on the monitor.. But im going to try all your other suggestions now thanks.

Use the jumper on the motherboard or remove the battery to reset the BIOS.
Try swopping memory modules around

are you geting a POST beep???

This really does need to be answered as you could spend hours looking for the problem in the wrong place.

Do you know what a POST beep is??

No harm in not knowing.... Ask if you're unsure. ;)

i take it its a beep before it starts up?? if so then im not getting that.

ok. Basically, the PC does a Power On Self Test (POST) when it starts up. The speaker on the mother board (if installed) will give one short beep if everything is ok. If theres a problem that it can detect it will give a series of beeps to indicate whats not working correctly.

If you're not getting any beeps at start up it could be that the machine isn't actually starting. Hence whys theres no picture on the monitor.

If I where you, I'd have a look inside the PC case and see if you can see the speaker. If you can follow the cable from it and make sure thats its plugged into the mobo.

If the speaker is installed and plugged in and you still don't get a beep, you have a harder problem to solve. The best thing to do would be to remove everything from the motherboard (expect the CPU) and power it on.

You should get a series of beeps then telling you that you have no RAM, Graphics card and HDD's. The you can start putting stuff back in powering it up each time to check that its working. You then finally find out what card/hardware is causing issues.

If you have no speaker on the mobo do you have any LEDs on the board it's self??

Some boards have four led lights that show in different configurations depending on whats not working on your machine.

hope it helps.

I once had a problem exactly like this.

I would press the power button and there would be no POST beep and the fans were working really hard (Loud). All I did to solve it was open it up, unplug all of the connectors and re-connect them, it's worked fine since then.

edit: Also the HD LED wasn't lighting up.

Has your monitor got different VGA ports? If so try using different ones, or HDMI, or even ones of the graphics card itself if its got multiple ports.

didnt seem to work :(..

what didn't work??

You're going to have to very specific in what you've tried and what has and hasn't worked or it will very difficult for anyone to help you.

What happened to looking for the motherboard speaker or LED lights to confirm that the motherboard is actually starting up ok and loading windows?
